I like the eastern foothills of the Rockies where it meets the Great Plains. Always been fascinated with topography in transition zones.

I wish Glacier National Park is easily my favorite part of the rockies, I just with they had single group back country camp sites like Yellowstone instead of shared sites or it would be impossible to beat.

Damn, i didnt realize that the rockies stopped in northern NM. I just kinda assumed that it went down all the way to Big Bend
In which case I somehow managed to make several trips east-west without going to the Rockies since I happened to always go through Texas/Southern NM
Oh well I am still going to say the Organs

Delineation of the southern Rockies and the basin and range province occurs in northern NM because that's where the main chain ends. Even though there are literally tens of thousands of peaks within the Rockies main chain and tens of thousands of peaks that fall outside of it but have line parents within the main chain of the Rockies. Texas' small mountainous area falls within either the basin and range province or the sierra madre occidental. Similar delineation occurs in the west along the Wasatch range in UT and the entire high country of AZ (and AZ's plateaus which are among the largest high elevation plateaus in North America). Even though almost all of AZ's and UT's thousands of peaks and hundreds of mountain ranges (AZ alone has over 210 mountain ranges and more individual peaks with 300ft+ of prominence than CO) contain line parents in the Colorado Rockies. The OP image only depicts the main chain, the North American Cordillera extends from the equator to the arctic in Alaska and includes the Rockies and all of its tertiary and disjunct ranges in western North America along with the coastal ranges.

while southern nm and texas have mountains following the same north to south line of the rockies, they generally formed differently. southern nm is basin and range horst and graben, while most of the mountains in west texas are volcanic, which are both distinct from the plate subduction which made the rockies.

I’ll be moving to Great Falls MT which is right outside the Rockies. Anyone have any recommendations for places I can check out other than Glacier National Park? I’ve looked at a ton of different areas online but always prefer to hear from people who’ve actually been. Only going to be in Great Falls for 6 months from May until the beginning of October, won’t get to experience any winter activities unfortunately.

Anything along the Front. Between the Bob, Scapegoat and Great Bear wilderness you have over a million acres of primo wilderness- combined with Glacier its some of the best in the lower 48

What’re the odds of running into one? My girlfriend is all excited about moving there but then freaks out about camping because of bears. If I’m going out with bear spray and a gun and not having a barbecue am I good to go or is there still a high chance of a run in/mauling? Where I’m from bear run ins are more common when there’s a full trash can around instead of when you’re out on a trail or camping.

As long as you're not leaving your trash and food strewn around camp, you'll be fine. I camp in grizzly country pretty often in the Summer and have never had an issue with them at camp.

I had one of my professors tell me that the Franklin Mountains occurred as a side-effect of the Laramide Orogeny (which made the Rockies) yet there were cindercones scattered within the vicinity (or at least that was his theory?)
