Coats. you ever wear coats in the woods? Cowboys also did it. The biggest benefit so far: I need no blanket or Sleeping Bag. The pockets are big enough for some food, a Mora and a BIC- lighter.

I tried that once in fall. Wouldn't recommend. Also a fucking slug sluggd on my hood around and left a suspicious stain. I had to soak the hood in water for an hour and scrub it out.

Buddy, I'll 'splain this to you real polite like. A coat is good, now don't get me wrong I've got a BDU jacket for fall weather and a Korean era Great coat for winter and that fucker heavy as it is will keep me warm in damn near anything. However, and this is a big however it is not a tent or tarp. I'll give you they make a quick easy blanket if you've already got a sleeping pad or even extra warmth in winter camping but that shit is not the same as a tent(unless you're in russia apparently) Most of these coats weren't designed to work alone and were meant to be used alongside other outdoors gear of their time. Just keep that in mind before you get too tryhard.

I've got a genuine NVA trenchcoat, made of wool. It most definately isnt a substitute for blanket/sleeping bag. It is just about right so that as long as I'm doing some form of physical activity (even just walking along), I stay at a comfortable temperature. If I stay still for more than a few minutes I'll start to get cold pretty quickly. The few times I've slept out with it (in summer) have been fucking cold and horrible nights. I am particularly susceptible to the cold though so maybe for other folks its okay.

I have a military surplus 1953 British wool longcoat in light olive damn near identical to yours.

I love it. Since most people don't wear a whole lot of environmental protection on their legs, it does wonder to help them in cold winds. They're not particularly water-proof, and in rain that wool gets real heavy real fast, and takes forever to dry off.

The cowboy longcoat was kinda sucky, and had a big split down the middle of the back so they could ride horses and the two halves would just drape to the sides of the horse.

I for one do most of my /out/ing in Norway, seeing as how I live here. I would not recommend going out without a proper sleeping bag in cold or temperate regions. Not even during the relative warm days of summer, because weather.

Tunics are indeed one of those unused items that actually are still practical to use.
The guy who was talking about cloaks on here before was being a bit fedora core.
Not hostile to such threads but you'd be stupid to wear a cloak in favour of practical equipment.
A tunic is in my opinion still fully usable.
The only problem is rain jackets would not cover the bottom of the tunic.
I suppose you could tuck it into waterproof pants but other than that how would you keep this part of the tunic dry?
Any advice sc/out/s?
