How would you rate your nation's school in terms of teaching /out/ related knowledge? Just the regular elementary school. It seems the youth is getting increasingly ignorant about the outdoors.

Either way, what did you get to try out that you're grateful for now that you're an adult?

>swimming
It should be taken for granted, but grown men are still drowning when they shouldn't. You're expected to learn on your own before attending first grade here, but we have tons of swimming in PE as well. I had to repeat the separate, after-school swimming school three times but am now a good swimmer. At the end of elementary school you are to be able to swim 1000 meters (in a pool, so even the fat kids make it), and also pull a dummy up from the bottom of the pool and carrying it with you with it's head above the water for 50 meters.

>use a map and compass
Lots of orienteering in PE and also field days with school-wide orienteering competitions, or just field days were we'd walk in small groups from our school to whatever cabin we were supposed to be at.

>getting out of cold water should you fall into a hole in the ice (using safety spikes as help)
Probably the single most important experience since it might be a bit hard to organize on your own unless you're taking a course.
