I don't personally have experience with either of those packs, but after looking at them here are my thoughts: For the price of the HMG Daybreak you may also want to check out the Pa'lante packs 'Joey'. I just recently bought one and it's a beauty. It's set up like a runners/fastpacking vest. I also have the plain and simple Osprey day pack which I find myself using often. Both HMG and Granite Gear are good companies and I don't think you would be disappointed with either if that's what you choose to go with.

I never had any issues with weight unless it's been a while since I hit the trail and even then I usually get my trail legs after about 2 or 3 days.
Then again, I've never had more than 30 pounds base weight which would would be considered ultralight 30+ years ago.

I'm personally in the market for a larger pack, not so that I can carry more gear but so that I can pack faster when breaking down camp. Stuffing sleeping bags into compression sacks, folding up a tent and then playing tetris organizing everything into the pack gets old quick; even on week long trips.

Anyone belong under pic related should check out Haglöfs L.I.M. series. I have tried out a lot of their stuff over the past few years. And I am really impressed with the quality and low weight. They know their shit, but I never see them mentioned on here.

I have from the L.I.M. series tested and approved:

Anyone here who does fastpacking? I'm a trail runner who's hiked a few times with a big pack in designated campsites, looking to do a mountain 50k in 2 or 3 days this summer.
I'll be below the alpine zone so I got a hammock, and instead of a quilt I'm going with an inflatable mattress which is a fuss to use but it works fine (and I can sleep on the ground if needed). Probably a sleeping bag as a top quilt.
Alcohol stove with aluminum pot for cooking. Water here is clean as fuck but I'll get filters for my flasks too.
Obviously will carry some food, coffee, spork, plastic cup, clothes, map, compass etc. Am I forgetting something?

As much as I agree with your perspective. Usually those festivals are held on private land and they clean up their land once finished. However the last festival i will ever go too I met a dude from Jamaica and he was nearly in tears about the amount of trash that was getting thrown out. People buy 100$ pop ups and just leave them behind. Its amazing how wasteful these people can be. The Jamaican said festivals used to be about conservation but recently that trend has died entirely.

As far as two quilts, it really depends on location. I only need a 20° Underquilt in the winter, which isn’t much heavier than a really nice inflatable pad. Still heavier though.

A hammock with a rain fly is great if there's a chance of rain. I had a trip years ago where it unexpectedly rained on us a whole day and we had no choice but to sit tight in camp. I was using a 10x10 rainfly at the time for my hammock and it was the only place we could hang out and cook dinner together. I don't know what we would have done without it because we were sharing meals and couldn't all fit in a single tent.

Many fastpackers opt for a bivy setup for weight, size and efficiency. I personally just bring a small dcf tarp, a 3/8 foam pad or neoair xlite and a quilt or sleeping bag. I change gear up depending on the trip and weather conditions. I also use aquamira over a filter for efficiency. I tend to go stoveless if possible. If you're in an area with bears you may want to carry bear spray. I don't personally, but many people do.

Also, if you're going to be covering a lot of miles you absolutely want to bring some anti-chafing stuff, body glide, nut butter, etc. And pick yourself up a roll of leukotape and cut off a few strips and put them on the sheet that stickers come off of. You don't need to bring the whole roll. Leakutape can be used for blisters, as a bandage and for gear repair. It's great! You may also want to bring a safety pin or needle and thread for draining blisters. Before you go to bed you can run a needle with some thread through any blisters. Leave the thread in and the fluid will drain over night. The blister will be hardened by morning. Tricks of the trade.

Isn't that just running? People have been going on huge multiday runs without calling it fast packing. I converted 50km to miles as well, and it's ~31 miles. Even doing that in one day is kind of standard distance for a fit hiker. Doing it over 3 days is pretty slow. Unless the vert is mad.

My area is really steep, rocky and rooty, with strean crossings and shit everywhere. The route I plan to fastpack is actually a 50k trail run course, one of the most difficult in the country - I could definitely hike it in two days. The fastpacking for me is more about the leisure, push hard and then chill, have the time to explore any sights nearby like waterfalls etc.
Fastpacking is basically unsupported multi day trail running. The term is just easier to use.

yeah, most our stuff is heavy duty shit made for harsh conditions. People will gladly buy south-pole-grade expedition gear for an overnight trip in the fall. For years there didn't really exist any mid tier camping gear to the extent that it does now. It was either ultra expensive heavy duty gear, or literal pieces of garbage you could set fire to as you left a festival. And I think the surviving brands from 15-20 years ago are still hyped up, because the gear still holds up. There is nothing wrong with it, it's impressively good. It's just extremely heavy. I fell in to the tried and tested trap myself when I started hiking and camping all those years ago. But it's all gone now that I have better alternatives.
