Can’t fix stupid. Just kill yourself for not being able to start a fire. It shouldn’t take you more than 8 seconds of flame to get a fire lit, and at that rate a single Bic should last you a year even lighting a fire every single day.

i posted this in the stupid questions thread. but i guess i'll try here.

i have a swedish firesteel like pic related. i like to use birch bark as a firestarter but i havent been able to start one using the birch. i've looked up some videos and they're using shavings from branches. but ive seen people use firesteels with birch before. is my technique off? or is it just this specific firesteel?

They got make ones with adjustable fuel settings which is cool. They last a lot longer while still putting out a pretty concentrated flame.

Yeah, I use one for the odd cigar.
I wouldn't use it while /out though. Not for any extended time anyway.
It'd be a solid option if you're only gone a day or 2 though.

Definitely. Sure, you could bring a fuel to refill it, at that weight and size together, I rather carry some thing else. I usually go with cotton balls that has tree sap that has been melted and mixed with them, usually get them going with a small ferro rod. Burn really well and for a decent time.

How? I smoke 2+ packs a day and a 5 pack of full size BICs lasts me a year.

Anything else is annoying and will reqiure a refill multiple times before a single BIC would run out.

I know such firesteels are tricky to use at first - I use a Helikon Tex ferrocerum rod nearly daily. Just search up "firesteel tips and tricks" or something like that.

I had a thunderbird insert for a zippo that was pretty cool, but my wife dropped it in a campfire and now I just use BIC because it's cheap and it'll either get lost or broken before I run out of fluid.

It's a refillable butane module that replaces the normal insert in a zippo. when you open the lid of the zippo it opens the valve to let out butane and you spark it like a normal lighter. Then you get the same sort of candle flame like a normal zippo. It's pretty neat, but QC can be spotty, like anything cheap from China.
the same company makes a bunch of different types of inserts, including the jet style flame and "pipe lighters" and Zippo makes butane inserts themselves as well.

It's not a sealed environment. The lighters that don't evaporate have rubber seals and usually screw shut, like the Exotac someone posted.

I like the butane torch type of lighter. They're basically completely windproof, and the flame shoots straight out, even upside down. Perfect for lighting tinder. You can get an insert that fits into a zippo case if that's your style too.

They're going for over 2X what they retail for on Amazon right now. They look pretty nice but I would much rather pay the $49 for one when they become available again. I am a Zippo man but they are far from ideal in the wet and snow right now. I'd like to think I could pack one filled that would not dry out. Just gotta keep watching.

Do some practice with cotton balls soaked in vaseline. I can usually get those to light with the first strike. You need something to kinda "catch" the spark, so if you do birch bark make it into kind of a nest and try to get the sparks into the center so they'll accumulate

Prolly the best thread to ask this question: how would one go about getting a fire going shortly after a rainstorm, or in otherwise wet/damp conditions? Always wondered how you'd get a rager going if everything is wet.

WA fag here.Depends on the amount of moisture bud. Try and find shit off the ground and get to the dry wood in the middle. Like a fallen tree propped up on another one. Dry out wet logs next to fire after it gets going. It is a system and it sucks.

try to get in the habit of squirreling away good tinder as you hike. A bit of birchbark, maybe a handful of twigs. Particularly if you know weather is coming. Plan ahead so you don't end up with nothing trying to start a fire in the cold dark rain.
