-montbell has the best domestic gear. Lots of stuff they do not send abroad, they sell only in Japan
-other gear shops are fine, but are mostly just imported goods
-Car camping in japan mostly blows.
-its mostly all set out campjos or private land
-you cannot drive into most national parks at all
-you can find some remote roads to drive up and camp on, but its almost guarunteed to be someones private forest land. Often they do not care, but if they do, you better move on. Also they do not like fires on their land.
-best camping is all backpacking
-even then its busy as hell on main routes.
-main route huts are expensive as fuck
-search for lesser know free 'evacuation huts'
-don't shit in the woods (or be sneaky about it, Japanese tend to shit in bags or pay hut fees).
-hokkaido probably has some decent car camping
I have found some okay car camping around, but it takes a lot of searching and going deep into the back woods, which are much more rare in japan due to population density.
