I was considering getting some old military web gear for hiking to hold a couple canteens, a radio to talk to my buddies, a GPS, a pistol for animals that may not be more afraid of me than I am of them, and other stuff I might want to readily access while hiking without digging in a backpack in a way that's more comfortable than a batman utility belt. /k/ told me that old web gear is obsolete, suboptimal, and that a modern chest rig and assault pack setup would be much better for my use case. I know ultralight is a major craze these days for hiking and camping so most people here wouldn't consider using such a setup, but I still feel like I should ask here if such a setup would actually be better or if it would just be LARPy while providing a minimal advantage.
