I bought 4 of the side packs from military surplus for 3$ each and they are great has molle straps so you can customize anyway you want. I used one to organize inside my 40 liter assault pack.
I can fit 7 one liter Smart Water bottles in one side pack. They stay standing up and out of the way in my pack( I usually just carry three one liter bottles, this side bag keeps them from falling over inside my backpack. Weighs as my as a pair of socks)
