Friend got hired to build this wood burning heater. I've never seen anything like it before personally but that don't mean much. Anyone here know anything about this design?

I dunno, but I can take a wild guess.
Wood burns on the bottom, smoke and heat rises inside to the top cylinder.
The 3 tubes in the cylinder are an attempt at having even more hot surface to heat the air, and thus making is ever so slightly more efficient at heating a space.
That's my best guess.

Chimney heat exchanger, works wonders with a fan behind it. They're not common enough.

Start fire in bottom, heat moves up and hits all those pipes, all those pipes produce more heat due to more surface space / air moving through it also heats up. Sorry for bad description, drunk.

Oh neato, yeah I've seen a few wood stoves but definitely nothing like this or what you got picture. Hopefully I'll get to see the one I posted get used and I'll let yall know how it works.

Looks like a coal fired furnace with out the metal box around it. only thing original is the top feed.

You're going to have a bad fucking time cleaning the soot form inside of that thing. You are either going to have a chimney fire or a gas explosion inside of it eventually. Make sure to poke some holes in it so that you are actually able to clean it. I can tell just by looking that you and your friend are never ever going to take that apart anymore after it's done.

Since people don't seem to understand how this thing works (or too drunk to explain it).

The 3 tubes are sealed from the smoke. Smoke/heat passes around them. This heats the 3 tubes. Air inside the tubes is heated and rises. It creates convection and literally "pumps" heated air through the device.
There are many different designs. They work extremely well.

Why would you do this when you could make a rocket mass heater? Maybe you don't have space for the mass but you could still use the heater design so you don't need to worry about soot and creosote and the maintenance that comes with it.
