if you go out to sit by a fire and smoke a pipe and read you don't need the strap shit
but if you hunt in brush or do a lot of water related activity it's really nice not to have to worry that they're going to get lost
mine have been through multiple kayak flips mountain bike spills and a roll down a muddy ravine covered in huge ferns
I lost my folding shovel in those ferns but didn't lose my glasses
