Most NPS rangers are either engaged in scientific research (research rangers), or interacting with and educating the public (interpretive rangers). If you run across a guy in the backcountry with a NPS ball cap and a GPS they're probably a research ranger. If you meet a ranger at a station with a smokey the bear hat and a big smile possibly leading hikes and always giving the campfire talks then you've met an interpretive ranger. If you meet a guy with a gun on his hip and a plate carrier, possibly with an ar15 and most likely a bad attitude then you've met a danger ranger. I've worked around them at several parks and monuments and the only one who wasn't an outright dick (actually a solid guy) was at Grand Quivara, the ruin in my last pic.
