The entire idea of a pack frame is to take weight off your shoulders and lower your center of gravity. Not only is it more comfortable, it means your body isn't working as hard to stabilize.

Protip: If your shoulders are sore from carrying a framed pack, your straps are way out of adjustment. Your waist straps are supposed to be holding all of the weight.

External frame packs have higher center of gravity than frameless/internal frame. So it is less stable, but it's easier to carry. Best for mild terrain, not scrambling through crags

Depends on how much and how heavy you're packing and how far you're willing to carry that heavy-ass shit.

If I'm going heavy, I'm taking the frame. It survived my boy scout era and is still going strong.

Just take what you need and a bag to go with it.

Somewhat related:
It seems like many kids carrying systems are external frame and some aren't.
For those, it appears to me an external frame makes sense, so I got a cheap, used one (McKinley, so store brand, 50€) to try out, and that thing totally sucks.
Is upgrading to Osprey or something worth it for me (and the kid, seems like he's also not too comfy in there).
Pic related. Gotta start them young.

I use an external frame because it was all I could afford and I haven't seen a need to change.
Sometimes useful when I'm hunting to tie squirrels to it.
Bet it would be useful for deer too but I don't hunt deer.

Not gonna create a new thread so here's my question:
