It's an instinct, but actually sign of a weak mind to not control it, to find a place untouched by man and to immediately give into the urge to taint it by leaving some sign behind that man was there and touched it. When I go into the wild, I want to be surrounded by nature, not by the feeble manipulations of some accountant on vacation who happened to be there before me. To leave these signs of man behind is no different than leaving behind the tissues they used to wipe their asses. To display this proudly may give them a feeling of having marked their territory, but it ruins the experience for everyone else.
