It does not have SSB, which would be pretty important if you're interesting in monitoring whats going on around you. If you just want to listen to 'official' broadcasts though, it'll be great. 400+ hours of battery life in something the size/weight of a TV remote.

Plus, with shortwave you open yourself up to a ton of international news. Like the other guy said, Voice of America and BBC world are usually enough to justify taking a moment out of your time, if you really are disconnected from civilization, as
