Is batoning worth it at all? I figure it's pretty pointless on cleaving big logs but for getting small splints off (for putting on fire after firestarter) firewood it should be fine right?

It's convenient for making small sticks yes but it can also damage your knife. I do it from time to time

if you're going to be splitting logs anyway just finish the job with an axe

It is largely uneccessary. You only really need to split wood for a campfire if you are trying to get to the dry wood on the inside. Even then you should be using a hatchet or make wood wedges and a wood mallet.

If you have no other way to get smaller wood/the dry insides of logs it makes sense, but it's not something you do every time you make a fire. More of a thing you should know in case you have to. Good knives can handle it when done right but why put more stress on them than necessary when an axe or splitter is made to do the job better.

I hold the axe steady face up angled down against the floor then smack the wood against it in a basic downward hammer like motion, then straighten it with my hand while still balancing slit on axe head, flip it around and finish the chop with the axe.

Cause ppl dont want to carry extra weight. If you're gonna be in one spot for multiple days, def take a small hatchet. I take a Esee 3 and a folding saw, that does all the wood processing I need.
