as they're practically antiques now (WW2 Surplus, so it's 80 odd years old) finding them for sale is pretty rare and when they do come up you can expect to play silly money. A UK milsurp shop 'found' a crate of them last year and were selling them for £50 a pop, they sold out in just a few days.
It's kinda annoying now as back when I was a kid in the mid 80s nearly every surplus pace had a box under the counter full of filthy ones. Nobody wanted to know about stainless, they wanted the light weight, Alu, M44 versions.
There are lots of kits in this style, I'm sure most of the European militaries have used similar at some point, but made from aluminium. Being Alu though I don't trust it not to burn through over a fire ect where I know the stainless will just laugh at being chucked into the coals.
Coming on from that, if you have the opportunity to pick one up, don't be afraid to spend money on it. I've got no hesitation in saying this thing will out last me and it'll like be passed down to one of my nephews at some point.
>>2049613 I carried one for years on and off but as
>>2050210 said the smell (a bit like fish) was a constant pong. As was also mentioned fuel availability has become a big issue. Hexamine has fallen out of favour as fuel source in recent times to the point I can't name single outdoors shop for about 70 miles that actually carries the stuff (and I live in a pretty /out/ area in the UK) you can still find the cheap and nasty Hexi but it burns like crap and leaves an oily residue on whatever it's heating, the genuine Esbit stuff isn't so bad but even on Amazon I can buy 2, 100G gas cans or 1tr of Metho for a spirit burner. It's not cheap, and burns fast
