What are /out/'s views on Rockhounding? In CA, § 4611 allows for 15lbs/day for personal use, with the exception of state parks and restricted areas.

Anyone have stories or advice on rockhounding?

i dont usually seek out good places to legally do it, but i've kept some cool shit from places I shouldn't. no one's stopping you. the GPAA is primarily for gold prospectors but worth looking into joining if they have claims near you, the book is loaded with good info on prospecting and rock hounding in different states- public areas or pay to dig sites.

I can't find fuckall about rockhounding in my area. The BLM site shows no land nearby, called the parks department and they didn't know a single thing, called the forestry department and a sassy black lady said "We don't do that here." Called the commission that provides oversight to the bay and spoke to a fucking literal scientist who said "I think that's illegal"

unless you pay for a claim or have scientific reasons to damage the ecosystem - there is no way you could possibly believe that outside help would be given. Specially from the source - those who protect nature. You need to read through forums hoping for advice and even then just go out yourself and know the laws that govern the area you're in. Much like other foraging/gathering activities - folk in the same thought process as you are not likely to give it up without getting something in return. MUSHROOMS and ROCKS BABY! LETS GET AFTER IT!

I grabbed every law and code I could find and put them in a, "I am allowed to do this" document. I swear homeless peole are able to shit on a eagles' nest and have more legal protections than your average joe looking to widdle a twig and pick up a sugar cube worth of quartz

yeah, it's kinda hard to wrap your head around most things but this link should provide good guidance for USA rules and regulations. A bit part of it is just doing what you want and if caught you apologize, plead ignorance, and offer to put the material back from where you got it. That has got me out of a few tickets. Being said - if they find you twice in one spot be ready for the fine. Can think about it as a cost of the hobby

Checked the reg's before I did it just in case some ranger rolled up on me. BLM rules say 250 lbs per person per day. My property is right next to BLM land. Got a shit load of rocks and built me a rock wall. I believe the reg's said that if you find something really amazing like a fossil or some shit you can't take that, but I'm not sure. I was just getting regular ass rocks.
