I have and I do, but often times where I'm at you wake up covered in dew. It's makes for a nicer experience to just throw up the tarp and not have to deal with as much condensation in the morning.

That said here in australia there's places where funnel webs wander at night and you definitely don't want to wake up to a probably deadly, aggressive big fucker crawling around on you looking for sum fuk. Having a tent to keep them off you is the smart thing to do.
But that's not the whole country so a lot of the time the only problem is fucking cane toads hopping around you, which is gross but not exactly dangerous.

Actually, Cowboys would basically wrap themselves up in oil soaked canvas when they slept like this. They were basically just wrapping themselves in a tarps.

I slept on a beach like this years ago and it was pretty surreal. I had a couple of those heavy duty blue tarps that I slept between with a couple blankets.

I do it a lot out in the desert. I love staring into the cosmos as I slowly fall asleep. One time on a Jeep trail in Canyonlands I woke up in the middle of the night half buried in sand. A wicked wind storm had kicked up and half buried me. I threw all my shit in my Jeep and slept uncomfortably in there the rest of the night.

when i was in the army we would just only sleep in a sleeping bag. I would just zip myself in like a cocoon.
I slept like a baby and never really had a big problem.
However i did this on army bases which seemed to me to have much less insects and animals than a normal forest.

I've cowboy camped about 4 times and 2/4 were pretty bad experiences. First time I was just about eaten alive by mosquitoes, the second time wasn't too, bad since it was in the desert so I didn't have the mosquito problem and didn't have to worry about being too cold. Third time I set up on top of a hill and had to roll myself up in my tarp like a burrito to try and stay warm when a wind storm decided to show up halfway through the night. Fourth time was under an overhanging rock so not sure it counts, but it was pretty comfy with a fire to keep warm. All in all I'd say it's best to go with a tent on most occasions.

It's pretty much exclusively a West thing, because of the extremely predictable weather and low humidity. I did it for years before ever getting my own tent whenever I went camping. Pretty comfy, and waking up to coyotes sniffing you is half the fun.

I'm not into it personally I like the shelter a tent provides but sometimes it can be a sin not to. But usally I slinked back into the tent late at night when I inevitably wake up.
But waking up to the slightly lit blue/dawn night sky with a blanket of stars is wonderous.

It definitely takes some practice doing the outside and open thing. Hammocks are the same way. Just getting used to seeing outside when sitting up is a little weird the first time. If you want to dip your toes, leave the tent rainfly open or off even. I did this once last summer, it was nice.

I've done this a few times and I actually prefer it assuming the weather is clear, especially if it's hot out. If I'm camping somewhere with a view I'll do this or cowboy camp.

I draw the line if I'm camping in thick woods. It's definitely more of a mental thing for me in that case.
I also wouldn't do this in big game country. Over the years I've had moose and elk run through camp and I'm pretty sure my tent was the only reason they didn't stampeded was my tent.

I've hitchhiked across Canada and back a few times and slept without a tent outside most of the time. I've had slugs crawl into my hair. I've been woken by deer (scared the bejesus out of me). I've been rained on (find an trailer or at least a picnic table to get under). Dew gets annoying as you have to pack up in the morning, move for a bit and if/when the sun comes out get your sleeping bag back out to dry it out properly.

Eventually I got a bivy sac.

Cowboy camped from the mexico border to tehachapi CA on the PCT in may 2018. Only was cold 2 nights (mt san j. And south of big bear lake) with a 20 degree quilt. You have to time the weather and pick wind sheltered or low elev spots so you dont get fucked. Then I met a grill and started shacking in her tent. Now shes my fiance.

Tbqh though it is nice to cowboy camp in the desert or on the beach. Both leave you vulnerable to little nasty buggers like scorpions or sand fleas but nothing major.

What worked well for me was sleeping bag inside a large bivy bag, and then I wore a mosquito hat and kinda brought the bivy bag up around it so the only hole was in front of my face, blocked to mosquitos by the mosco hat mesh. This was in the middle of manitoba, a place notorious for mosquitos, and I was fine.

I've noticed that on longer trips your body stops responding so much to mosquito bites. While in the first week you get big swollen lumps, after that you get tiny red dots without much itchjng or swelling.

My goal is to find some kind of blanket I could use instead of a sleeping bag (to make it easier to dry) and to use an oiled cloth tarp instead or additional to a bivy

I have it's nice. Last time was during a meteor shower up on top of a plateau for a fantastic view of the night sky. Super comfy falling asleep under the milky way and shooting stars.
