What sort of canoe/kayak/paddle board trips do you take? Am I allowed to canoe camp on random islands in state parks? Just got two cheap inflatable paddle boards from china, I'm excited for nice weather to hit

Depends entirely on the park. In most places freecamping is frowned upon and they'll ask you to leave, if not cite you for trespassing or something related. However there are some places where you pay to fly in and you canoe from lake to lake just fishing and camping at marked areas until your scheduled flight out. I've seen it more in Canada and far north though, and I don't expect that to be everywhere.

Only if that ranger has the gumption to get to you, so generally not going to get busted if you're camping on an island and off and away from major trails (island duh). Look up your regs, but most NF's are fine with camping so long as you're 100ft away from trails and other camps.

I got a big inflatable dinghy that allows a bunch of bags to get put in it. My friens with kayaks can't take a lot of luggage so if I show up an hour later with everthing it's the best of both worlds.

This is not camping related, but I'm interested in boat (I think kayak or canoe) suggestions. I'd really like to take my two young children (both about 5-years-old) boating on a small local river. I would be staying in calm sections of the river. Here's a few of the parameters.

- Not too heavy. Something I as a lone adult could reasonably carry. Ideally it would be something light like a typical kayak but
- Something that can fit an adult and ideally two small children. It was a tight squeeze, but I did have some prior success kayaking around a lake with both of them sitting in my lap. I don't know long that would last before they grow too large.
- Something where you should be able to stay reasonably dry. A lot of sit-on-top kayaks look like they're designed to give you a more immersive water experience than I'm interested in.

Right now I'm leaning toward something like this.

I just bought a cheap ass kayak and have looked into adding some mods to camp and fish with it. Dunno about camping with a paddleboard though as you have absolutely no storage.... Unless you wear a backpack with a drybag in it which is probably your best bet. But when it comes to a kayak you can easily rivet or bolt a rod holder, and however many tie downs you want to it for very little money. The scariest thing is just not having a bulkhead though if you are in wider rivers.

Just know that the shorter it is, the less stable of a platform you have.
I have a 12 foot sit on top kayak and I would NOT want one much shorter than this. I haven't tipped myself yet, but I've had to be careful with how I adjust my weight/balance when conditions are anything but placid.

Short kayaks are usually for whitewater and to use with a skirt so you can flip it back topside if you capsize. They're just for running rapids. You can't really camp or fish out of one and they're slow on flat water.

Short kayaks are slower and track like shit. You're not going to have a fun time paddling it. If you're worried about maneuverability it's more related to the shape of the bottom, how rounded, how much rocker, etc. though an 18' kayak is still going to be a bitch to turn in tight areas. Also if you're in a fairly calm estuary a canoe may serve you better.

Things to look for:
Bulkheads (if you roll you can get back in and bail)
Watertight compartments (camping equiptment)
Sit on top vs sit in

There are a ton of mods you can add with a power drill and a riveter, like rod holders, tie downs, anchor, trotline pole. I have a $300 pelican.

I have a zion national park trip planned with the homies but the rental places there don't have shit for kayaks. 2 of them are going to drive then me and another dude will fly in. What do you think would be a better deal, rent a canoe instead or buy a cheap recreational on offer up in salt lake then just flip it upon departure. Honestly I had a Sportspal canoe. Bought it as a cheap canoe but ended up going all over with that thing. The tin aluminum seems like it would damage easily but it was surprisingly tough. I put it through it's paces for almost ten years then sold it for almost what I paid. I would love to get another one.

I have a couple inflatable paddle boards I grabbed them back in 2017. They are fun but I wouldn't plan an overnight trip with them. Paddling in the wind is awful and they have a fair amount of drag compared to a hard board or a kayak. Good for a day trip down a river or exploring a lake though.

There are a lot of lakes in my area. I can go explore public lakes or the ones in state parks with my dog, do a day trip down a river, or just goof around while the rest of the family is doing watersports. Definitely not as fun as I thought it would be but my wife isn't into super high speed stuff so it's something we can do together.

I went to the gym before covid, but It closed tall the local gyms, including the one I went to.
I’ve since moved to a state that isn’t retarded/require masks, but I now live 40+ minutes away from the nearest gym/city.

I try and keep a modest work out routine & have a single pair of weights but I honestly don’t give enough of a shit to buy a whole workout room.

12 feet is the minimum I'd recommend to anyone except some teens and kids. Anything less is hard to keep in a straight line (although 12' is still nimble enough) and you lose so much storage.

Me neither. They're neat for an hour or two, if you're going anywhere (especially with no current) the novelty wears off fast. Idk if you can even paddle against more than a weak current on one of them.

Don't buy a $200-$300 kayak at Walmart et al. They're shit. Save more.

Budget at least $125 or so to a good paddle, it is such a good investment and makes being on the water so much better. It's worth it to reduce your kayak budget to increase your paddle budget. Any so many people use shitty heavy cheap paddles and don't know how bad they have it

Get a decent PFD, don't use the shitty cheap orange ones

Make sure you have a waterproof case or bag of some sort, a Zip-loc bag alone will inevitably leak and may not be buoyant enough to float with your phone/keys/wallet in it

Even a cheap aftermarket seat/ seat back is better than none at all and is a nice upgrade if your canoe/kayak doesn't come with one

Think about how you're going to transport your kayak before you buy it.

Yes, you paddle with your hands closer together but basically you have a narrower paddle. Then you can use it more like a rudder when you have to and it's easier to flip.

I don't need to be a giant muscle man, I'm not going around punching bears or wrestling hogs to the ground. My state has open carry with no permits, so it's not like I don't have options for defending myself, and even at my light weight, my height is intimidating enough that I've never had someone give me issues/try to get in a fight.

I'm not trying to look like Arnold or Stallone, I'm quite happy being stringbean desu, my great-grandpa was built the same way.

I slack on that too often as well it turns out.
I'm lucky I can convince myself to do it once a day most of the time.

Remember like a 3 year stretch where I'd go weeks without doing it. Went from 0 cavities to several a year real quick.
I try and go on regular hikes through the state park I live next to with my dogs, and with how big the pair of them are, it ends up being pretty decent cardio.
Can't be fucked to do much besides that and the occasional backpacking/camping trip though.
