>>2034004If you can, dig a shallow pit in the soil and ring it with rocks, that has two benefits:
1. the hot coals will be resting in the dirt below the sod, so the chances of a rootfire spreading underground are lessened
2. the rocks will be sitting in dirt and thus won't have to be tightly packed together allowing a better draft into the coals to keep your fire hot and healthy
Be super fucking careful about underground fires, I had a campout once at my usual spot (pic related) after a couple years where the roots and weeds invaded the fire pit. About 30 hours after I put the fire out I went back there to pickup some trash I'd left behind and the ground was burning about 10ft away from the fire pit. After you have a few fires the roots and organics are mostly cauterized but the first fire of each season has the potential to smoulder underground
