Does anyone have any history or knowledge on buying American Chestnut trees? They are beautiful trees and I'd love to have quite a few growing in my fields. Problem is, most garden/greenhouse centers I call don't have either the trees or chestnuts for me to buy. I found this link that claims to send you chestnuts, but I'm not too sure on this site, is it legit, if by some miracle any of yall bought some off of here. If not, where can I find American Chestnuts? I'd like to make the "Critically Endangered" go away.

If you really want to get depressed, read up on how good they used to have it in the US. Chestnut trees were everywhere. The wood was used to make furniture that would last for generations. They generated TONS of food. The trees grew very large, both up and around. They were absolutely a gift from God. Now they're functionally extinct (not entirely gone, but if you left them alone, they'd peter out entirely).
There are a number of groups trying to breed them to the point where they become resistant or immune to the blight, but it's slow going and It only MIGHT be something we see in our lifetime. But yeah, if that website says it's selling resistant trees, you can give it a shot.
www.acf.org is a good place to read up on what's current.

there's a genetically engineered version with only one insert gene (to get rid of oxalic acid) that is resistant to the fungus. It's better than the chinese hybrids and I think that is the future of the chesnut.

Chesnuts were abundant because natives planted them.

I wish I had learned about the American Chestnut extinction in school because it's actually interesting good american history.

Chestnut trees once made up nearly 30% of all the trees in Appalachian forests. Their complete decimation by the asian fungus in just about 10 years, which is unfathomably quick for something as far and wide and old as trees, was an ecological disaster for the USA the likes of which is unparalleled in the 20th century. And nobody knows about it today, it's really crazy.

The ones that are left are from the roots of the big ones. They live for a bit but typically dieback from the fungus before they can flower again. Then the cycle continues.

They are basically gone as a species which is why people are hybridizing chink and American chestnuts to plant and survive the fungus

I think its more that native american caused fires opened up the forest allowing more well spaced trees, which made them bigger and more productive.

Natives start forest fires on the regular anon. Oaks and presumably chesnuts are more fire resistant. The lack of forest fires recently is what has been theorized to cause the spread of lyme disease.

Was pretty cool to see, considering I'm in the tip of their northern range here in Ontario. Good thing is the local conservationist know about them, there were a few chestnut saplings that were protected by plastic fencing. I mean to go this year and see if I can't get some nuts and plant them.

There are a few hundred known pure American chestnut trees still alive. Mostly they were planted in strange places by people who moved away from Appalachia so blight never reached them. There's a couple in Wisconsin I believe.

These are big, old, climax trees (they grew with a forest already around). They are in an "isolated" pocket and are easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking at. There are other small pockets of A. Chestnuts in Ontario still, mostly remote or planted stands that happened to avoid the blight. I know in the States there are a handful of full groves with hundreds of trees still around, well hidden/isolated. Hopefully they can get the breeding program to the distribution and planting stage soon. Would be cool to have my kids/grandkids enjoy fresh roasted chestnuts.

I forget the website, but there's an American Chestnut foundation you can get seeds from. You have to sign up for their membership which is expensive if I remember correctly, but you get other perks along with seeds I believe.

Got lucky and bought the entire stash of old chestnut lumber salvaged from a barn.

6 timbers over 30 ft long and 15 at around 10 - 16 feet long along with random length boards up to 20 inches wide and nearly1 1/2 inches thick, all for $3,500. 2k to ship it to me.

Anerican chestnut is a rare wood.

Some wannabe woodworker wanted to take it off my hands for $5 per board foot.
