>determine budget (let's say you have $150)>go to anywhere that sells any reasonable amount of fishing gear>buy a fishing rod that costs ~30% of your budgetfenwick is okay, Berkley is okay, ugly sticks, if nothing else, are near indestructible. You'll want something in the 2 piece 6-7 foot, medium to medium light spinning rod range. Should be in the 6-17 ish pound test range.
>spend 25-30% of your budget on a reel. A daiwa crossfire 2500 is about as good of a reel as $20 will get you, but as long as it's in the 2000 or 2500 class it should be good enough for now. If you want mono get 8 pound test Berkley trilene or suffix superior. If you want braid get 20 pound power pro and consider picking up a small spool of 8 or 10 pound mono for leaders. Take whatever money you have left and buy
>assorted aberdeen hooks>assorted splitshot>3/4 inch red and white bobbers>a flat plano box>fishing license You can buy bait but I'm a cheap bastard and will often dig my own earth worms in the summer
Take this stuff to near any lake or pond with a fishing dock, and rig up
>uni knot holding on the smallest aberdeen hook you have>10 inches up from that a splitshot>clip on your red and white bobberSet the bobber to hold your bait at 3/4-2/3 of the water depth. In 8 foot of water you'd have 5-6 feet of line between your bobber and hook. 3 feet is a good starting point, too
