I use this if it's hot or my bucket hat if I want something foldable. I have a beaverskin stetson but never have found it useful outside of going to a shitkicker. They only really make sense at high altitude where it's cold AND sunny.

I'm actually sorta doing that, definitely moving out of my state in a few months and Northern New Mexico is looking likely. I'm not sure how many people there really wear cowboy hats and how much is just larping tourists though.

I'm also kinda fucked over by needing glasses to do pretty much anything, kinda hard to pull off a stetson with them, and contacts aren't an option for me. I guess at least I can wear prescription shades with a cowboy hat and not look completely ridiculous.

My eyes got fucked up in a bad accident years ago and I can't wear contacts because of lasting damage. Contacts are also just sketch for /out/ shit in general, especially in dusty environments, because grit can get trapped in there and really fuck your eyes up.

I've been wearing them since childhood as my grandparents had a cattle ranch. Also I'm from Arizona. The only reason brimmed hats fell out of fashion is because of the car seat headrest which forces you to take it off and put it on your dashboard.

Anywhere the sun is shining down and kicking your ass is a good place to wear a hat, stop giving a fuck what people think.

They have these lifeguard hats at home depot for thirty bucks, they have a comfy elastic headband on the inside and a chin strap that keeps it on your head when the wind blows.

Not very packable though. Just search for sun hats online, you'll find something you'll like. IMO the wider the better.

Ah yeah, that makes sense. I've never been a fan of those crushable type hats though, I like the thinner, stiffer material of cowboy hats. I guess I could get a hybrid between the two though, have a Stetson or similar done up with an outback-style crown and a smaller, flatter brim, something like this.

Not him but contacts used to all be made out of glass. Nowadays the soft plastic ones are much more common but they still use hard glass when somebody has an unusual prescription that isn't manufactured in plastic. AFAIK it's particularly common for people with really bad astigmatisms. I'm the anon with fucked up eyes that he was replying to and I'm in that boat, if I wanted contacts they'd have to be glass because of astigmatism and my eyes are too fucked up to wear those comfortably, I could probably handle soft contacts if they fit my oblong-ass eyes but they don't.

I have two. The sun runner and the adventure hat. Sun runner is the better choice in wind but I have copped sun on my nose wearing that one before.
Adventure hat has great coverage. More coverage than the ultra adventure.
Best part of these hats is they are dorky and it's very obvious what you are wearing them for.
No one will think you think that you look cool therefore they are not cringe like say a trilby would be.

Question for the Americans. Why is there a negative perception with things like sun hats? Am I crazy, or do most people put them in the same category as hiking poles, reflective vests and white socks and running shoes.

Genuine question - it is something I observed. I think just calling it a cultural thing would a cheap misuse of the term.

To stay somewhat on topic, I generally just take an old baseball cap but sometimes I will put a bandana in it if I need my neck covered.

Don't worry. Just get some cloth like 100% cotton and cut a square of it about 26 or 28 inches on each side and bam. You have a head wrap that doesn't look like an army larp. I use one in the winter for shoveling snow. Works great for sun protection when you fold it to have a brim, but it does get a little hot from the layers.

looks pretty nice, I've have a Filson Tin Cloth coat. Its pretty stiff material so if your backpack sits close to the back of your head you may want to find a wide brim hat that has a softer brim. Maybe check out the Tilley Airflo hats.

I wonder if anyone makes a fancy modern version that collapses into something you can stuff in your pack easily but unfolds into a giant cone hat with some stiffness like that. All the ones I've seen have been either floppy and annoying as shit to wear in even the lightest breeze, or too small to really be worth wearing over something like flap hats in OP that offer better projection.

The best hat I ever had was a waxed canvas one made in Canada, bought in Paddy Pallin, Sydney. Wide stiff sun brim, waterproof, crushable, air vents, a leather chin strap with a thick leather button tightener. So comfy. Last year I left it in a public toilet in a somewhat remotely located beach I walked to. (Realised and went back an hour later. but hat was gone.) I replaced it with a similar but inferior waxed canvas one that was made in China. (That was the closest thing I could find in Sydney.) Also I am constantly paranoid about losing that one now.

The Zpacks hat was interesting. I made a poncho and that hat is waterproof so I wouldn't have to use the hood which my design wasn't the best. It also can be used as a sit pad since it has a foam core. It has more uses than the Kavu Chillba hats.
