Thru-hiking is mostly based when it doesn't involve the Appalachian Trail.
Having been on sections of the AT, PCT and CDT during thru hiker season, the crowed that hikes the AT is easily the most casual and full of weird hippies. The campsites and shelters along the trail are also the dirtiest.

This. You could theoretically walk the entire length of Appalachian trail and stay in shelters the entire way. I believe I've heard there is a shelter on average every 9 miles the entire trail.

I really don't see the big draw other than telling people you did it.

There's actually quite a bit decent backpacking in the Appalachian mountains that is scenic and isn't terribly overcrowded. The AT is just a tourist magnet. It's comical how overlooked some of the better places are just a mile or two from the trail.

Really? Context clues aren’t helping? It’s when you hike a trail in a single trip. Usually people reserve the phrase for long distance trails (over 100 miles), which makes sense because saying you thruhiked a 10 mile trail is stupid.

For real though. I gathered that it was hiking the whole thing in one go but I figured there was more to it than that because I don't think that's enough to warrant talking about it like it's any different to regular hiking. It's the same thing except more of it and with more preparation.

Yes, from the start of a trail to the end of it. I hiked 110 miles of the Pinhoti Trail in one trip. It’s a 300 mile trail. It wasn’t a thruhike.

It doesn't have to be that long. But typically the term thru hike is used to describe the end-to-end hike of a defined route in a single attempt. It's usually reserved for multi-day trails or routes as saying your thru hiked a day route just doesn't feel right. However, I refer to my hike of the AT as a thru hike and my hike of the pfiffner traverse as a thru hike, but the first was >2000 miles and the second was ~75 miles.

That's a 2 week trip for 2 to Hawaii
I'm not a thru-hiker, but it's a way better bang for your vacation buck
