First time buying a bivvy bag.
Anything I should know/look for?
Whats a reasonable price to pay?
Are there any good or bad brands to avoid?

Bivy bags are extremely specialized equipment, because they tend to collect condensation into the inside of them.

The general rule of thumb is that the more expensiver they are the better they be.

Can anyone tell me if these are any good/worth it? They claim to let condensation out but reflect warmth. 60 bucks is a little steep for a backup/emergency item. Are they good enough to use regularly?

only biivy bags worth a damn are:

I should add, some people find an ultralight compact emergency bivvy worthwhile kit to take for very specific outtings (planning to cowboy camp, but want a safety buffer if extreme cold hits etc) but I never found a use for one personally.

I have one and it's kinda useless
too small to go over a sleeping bag well and will compress your fill
it's made for an emergency with just your clothes on under it
also as for the moisture I got really sweaty when I tried it in the yard
I'll probably never use it for anything again don't waste your money

I have been using bivies for a while now and I like them but agree they are specialized. They are literally just a waterproof bag that goes over your sleeping bag. You still need a pad and I would recommend also having a poncho or tarp with you. I like fully waterproof bags that way I can just through it down and not worry but if I know it is going to rain I put up a poncho as a tarp. The place the bivy fails is getting out of it in the rain. The second u open it up water will get in. Also, your gear is out in the open, but I just put my bag in a trash bag or just put it next to me. Get one with mesh over your face. It is a must with a bivy, that way it keeps bugs off you and keeps condensation down. I have to OR alpine bivy and it is great, it has mesh and can be sealed up completely. I would recommend starting cheap and make sure u like it because it is not for everyone.

im legitimately just a noob, idk why everyone's calling this bait. Always wanted to go camping but I dont want to mess with setting up, taking down and carrying around a tent.

If you only have a pack could you stuff it in the foot of the bivvy or use it as a pillow? Planning a 3 day hike and want to go as light as possible.

Depending on both the bivy and the pack u might be able to. If the pack is small or the bivy is big, yeah u could. The three main reasons I like bivies is they are easy and fast to set up, light, and I like that they are low profile. I know that does not matter to a lot of people but I think it comes in handy.

Those are the exact 2 reasons I was considering bivvy, ty.

Do you have to put down a foam mat or can you get by with just a good sleeping bag? Whats the point of it? Could I use something cheap like this stuff?

The 2 big reasons you want a pad is comfort and insulation. If you can deal with the lack of comfort and the heat lost without a pad then yeah. I would say get a pad. I have a foam and an inflatable and hands down the inflatable is more comfortable. You can buy nice pads for pretty cheap like 40 bucks. If you want to go real cheap I think Walmart has some that are really cheap. If you want light and easy to use you should look for the Thermarest foam pads. They are good for all year and super light and easy to use.

Also, I have slept with a non-insulated pad in below-freezing temps and it sucks cock. You lose so much heat it is incredible. So if you are in a cold climate get a pad with a high R-value which most foam pads have.

I'm planning on going in the summer so I'l pick up one of those thermarest pads or maybe try it padless. Don't want to risk freezing to death in winter on my first try because I dont know what im doing.

How do you clean/care for a bivvy?
For the OR alpine is the bug net part also waterproof?
Is it alright to just lay it out on the ground or do you need to put a tarp down first or something?

yep same for that very reason. the only thing i dont like is that my OR bivy is BRIGHT BLUE. kinda want to get a camoflage tarp or something to drape over it but thats yet another stupid thing to carry
