Hey /out/ disabled vet here.
Due to the shutdown. I obviously and looking into homelessness.

Any Idea for a good makeshift shelter? I don't think a fridge box will get me through a winter.

Reusable mylar blanket (not the super wrapped foil) combined with waterproof tarp and some cordage to rig it. Then just get something underneath you.

Should be snug and it's not expensive equipment so it shouldn't get stolen right away.

I'd look into good places to squat though, depending on how you're disabled.

Hey man, I'm a disabled vet also. The va helped me out so much. The damn military put me out on my ass after a helo mishap. I'm in mass and could help you look into va options if you're in the area.

VA and Military disability checks went out for October already, and unless the shutdown lasts past the 21st, you will be getting your November check on time.

Otherwise, contact Army Emergency Relief, it exists for all services for situations just like this, they will give you an interest free loan in advance of your delayed pay.

I know that feel OP, my family, and extended family all live in something of a co-op together so thankfully I still have a place to live even if the govt doesn't get it's crap together. If it wasn't for my family, I would be on the streets with my wife and child. Pisses me off the first place they talk about cutting from is us.

Hey OP, I'm not sure if you are still checking this thread out. I'm a disabled vet in MA. I can connect you with some services at the VA who would be more than happy to help. Also while I don't have a place for you to stay I do have quite a bit of gear to keep you comfortable until the VA shelter comes through.

Nah dude, you want to stay away from shelters, they are extremely shitty places to be. Got to worry about ppl mugging you, catching lice etc. I was homeless for nine months, I rather sleep out in the rain, then go to another shelter again.

If the Republican'ts want to shut down government for political reasons EVERYTHING should shut down, including military pay. It's a bit hypocritical that they get to close what they don't like, the NSF, the NEA, parks, but then keep what their supporters like. It should all just go black.
