Every inflatable pad I've ever used has been absolute shit. They either deflate, easily puncture, or have leaks that develop on the seams after just a few trips. I've just stuck with foam from now on. It doesn't way much more if at all, and I've just accepted the bulkiness.

had an old thermarest inflatable that was originally my parents, thing was older than i was but was the best pad i had ever used, until a day 2 of a 4 day trip when the thing got a puncture i could not find and became useless. I use a foam pad now. maybe not as comfy but the thing can’t break on me.

It really depends on how you tend to sleep at home. If you're a side sleeper then an inflatable is a good option. I personally would recommend the neo-air xlite. If you are short go with the women's model as it has a higher r-rating and will keep you warmer. Even in the summer the ground can sap your body heat and leave you chilly even with a good sleeping bag/quilt. If you are a solid back sleeper then a hammock is ultimately your best option and a foam pad is your second best although an inflatable will be even more comfy. Another thing to take into account is efficiency. An inflatable is more fuss, but more comfy. If you want to set up/break down as fast as possible a foam pad is a nice option. Also, I tend to not like anything strapped to the outside of my pack so I often opt for an inflatable or a 3/8 foam pad folded up and used as frame support in my pack. If you toss and turn and or are a side sleeper you may want to bring an inflatable pillow as well. Try to simulate how you sleep best at home innawoods.

I've been using a Klymit sleep pad that I bought on Amazon for $40 almost a decade ago. It's gotten some pretty good use and has held up pretty damn good over the years. Last year I bought a Thermarest fold up pad to go with it and have zero complaints. Pretty decent inflatable pad for what I paid.

What's a good inflatable pad that has a very small pack size? I don't care about weight so much, just that it packs up small and I can chuck it in a duffel bag without taking up much room. It's for use when motocamping. I currently have a thermarest foam pad and while it is quite light it is also very large and is a pain to strap down to the bike.

If you are very fat an inflatable will probably puncture faster. Also probably why so many people complain about their cheap inflatable pads deflating- because they weigh a ton. I find my inflatable very easy to inflate and deflate. Its a cheap 25 dollar one.

I have a 'Ryno Tuff' inflatable one that I got as a gift a couple years ago and that's been good so far, and is a lot better for backpacking, but not sure if there's an /out/ consensus on that brand so maybe I'm uninformed.

for what it's worth to this thread I've literally never had a problem DEflating a pad. literally pop the valve and roll it up? I had a self-inflating one, that takes some effort but really just roll it up twice.

Depending on the filler port you can sometimes use a plastic bag and a rubber band as well. I experimented and was able to get it to like 90% filled and then topped it off normally. Definitely reduces the amount of moisture that gets in.

my sea to summit pad has none of the lroblems mentioned in this thread. the intake has a one way valve so it gets firm easily and to deflate you just pull the valve and it deflates all at once and can be rolled up immediately

Rolls up into the size of a soda can and still gives you 3 inches of loft when inflated. Ignore the reviews saying it deflates, I took mine on a 5-day trip across the Superstition Mountains in AZ and it's fine, despite sleeping in one the sharpest, thorniest places one can hike on the continent.

I owned one of these and my god was it loud. I toss and turn and I always felt awful if I ended up in a shelter with others. It did end up getting a slow leak during a hike of the southern half of the AT, but I was okay with that. I went back to the neoair x-lite and left the big red loud leaky monster in a hiker box with the patch kit. I hope someone was happy to find it and got some use out of it. I just took my x-lite on an overnight and I'm happy to report it's still holding up well.

It does for sure, but the axl pad was worse. They each have their own unique noise. I think the potato chip sound isn't as bad as the noise the material of the axl pad was. I had a few people bitch about it on trail.

Yes I did. The reason mine was red was because it was the insulated version. Perhaps the version you have is quieter.

Yeah, the insulated model is a completely different product. "Loud" is not a quality I would ever associate with the model I posted. It has the same amount of noise as any other inflatable pad.

That's cool. A noisy pad can really drive you crazy. How is the r-value in that thing? Does is keep you warm? I have a sea-to-summit ul pad that isn't insulated and it was great backpacking around India, but I found it wasn't warm enough for camping in New England. That's why I opted for the x-lite. I've been curious about the uberlite as well. It's supposed to be much quieter, but not much warmth and it's pretty delicate. I'll have to check out the specs on your pad as well.

It's not listed, so I would assume 1. I have the mummy version and it weighs 9oz and packs down to sodacan-size, like I mentioned. So for me doing ultralight backpacking in the West, it's perfect.

Camping in 45-50F weather you're still warm, but below that the air inside gets cold fast. I took it on a trip that got down to about 35 at night, and adding a thin sheet of neoprene foam on top kept me plenty warm though. If you live in New England I'd probably stick with the X-Lite, but out here in Arizona it's nearly a 4-season pad lol.
