Anyone using a sunhoody for hiking/mountaineering? What are your experiences and what brand/model/fabric would you recommend?

I've never used one as I tend to run super hot and opt for t-shirts, but I've been curious about them as well. They seem to be a popular option these days.

I have a bunch of them from sailing and they work alright for hiking but most of them are very thin/fragile so don't hold up well if you are brushing past any branches or rocks. I also feel like they aren't super versatile (they protect from sun without being too hot) so are alright for day hikes where you know exactly what you are going to get for the next few hours but anything longer I'd bring more traditional hiking clothes. The hoods on them can be a little annoying and you wont win any fashion points but they definitely work at protecting neck/head from the sun. Just remember to sunscreen your face and front of neck.

I live in a fishing town so I grab them at the second hand store when I find them. They're pretty unbeatable under a kayak pfd. I really like the cut of the russell ones, but they're so thin I've gotten burned through them when out all day. The NRS and OR are better sun protection and I like the hoods more, but the seams sometimes get to me. The thumb slits are neat if your putting layers on over them. There decent for hiking, but personally a hiking shirt/ hat combo has more versatility for me.

They call them glacier shirts in NZ. They're a staple of summer mountaineering here as much as shorts and leggings are a staple of tramping, especially when combined with a legionnaire hat and buff.

White polyester shirts a size or two up from the op shop/thrift store are the low-tech solution. Work great in the mountains with some dark coloured long thermals underneath.
