Depends on the bear.
If a black bear attacks, you're better off fighting back since most attacks are predatory.
Grizzly bears are kinda impossible to judge and can go either way because they can be extremely territorial and will maul you because you simply go too close to them or their food. But, sometimes they will kill someone to eat.

I don't know about that that, a silver tipped grizzly look mighty aesthetic.

Grizzlies are just a subspecies of a Brown bears that tends to live in harsher environments more inland. If I remember correctly, I believe I read somewhere that the California Golden bear was also a separate subspecies.

What if it's a national park? You're totally fucked if you fire off rounds in the backcountry in Yellowstone or Glacier. Especially if you aren't actually attacked and end up killing the bear.

I carry bear spray and keep a pistol for when I'm sleeping in the tent. I've also read that Grizzly bears will fake charge and shootong them with a gun might antagonize the bear and make it attack.

GRiz are not attacking you because of their ego. They are attacking you because they percieve you as athreat to either their offspirng or their food. If you eliminate the threat by being and/or playing dead then they move on...

I've heard of people who were being idiots and got caught shooting guns in national parks. Poaching is still an issue in national parks, outfitters are said to still have Elk hunts cross over into park boundaries from time to time in Yellowstone.

Animals have underlying instinctive behavior, to see this just wiggle a feather at your cat and it will attack it.

If the bear is hungry, you're fucked cause it's going to eat you anyway. If it's not hungry and just attacked you because it was protecting it's territory or you triggered its instinctive behavior to attack a prey then wriggling round will just make it keep mauling you. Instead of getting bored and going to do something else.

I was going to post the same thing. If you think a black bear is about to start eating your guts while you are still alive, do whatever you can. This is for dire situations. Ram your fist as far down their throat as you can, they hate it. Works for big cats and most large predators. With Grizzlies, good luck.

You're not going to outrun the bear. Bears tend to scavenge, so you're not really "playing dead". They attack you because you're either in their space, or being a large mammal as well, you could potentially be a threat. Playing dead shows you're not that interesting.
