The bottom ring that attaches my reel to the rod gets loose often, do you guys have any tips to prevent this? I was thinking of using plumbing tape to create a tighter fit. Not sure if they make a product for this or if there is a better solution

Big ass Rapala original floater, a middle-ass daredevil, and a small ass (#4) Rippin Rap.

I don't think these are actually my most productive lures (the Rippin Rap is up there), but they are the lures that have provided the most exciting fishing of my life though.

Probably would have gone with a #1 Mepps instead of the Rippin Rap if it wasn't for ice fishing.

Man that does sound neat. I'm about equidistant from the gulf of mexico and hudson bay, so I just ice fish for walleyes, panfish, and pike, and can catch burbot or lakers if I drive a couple hours.

How much do the tides typically change the water level in the summer? It's hard for me to imagine a saltwater fishery where the ice stays firmly attached to shore.

Looking to fish the sunshine skyway pier tonight in Tampa. Fairly new to florida but ive been fishing a couple times.

Im wanting to target spanish mackerel, sheepshead, and grouper tonight.

Any tips on bait, and tackle, and if any anons know the skyway any tips on where to fish on location?

Ive got a shimano 4000 on a med light rod, and a penn 5000 on a medium heavy rod, as well as some old 80s misc rod i use with a sabiki for bait.

Is a 5000 with 50lbs braid and 40lbs mono leader enough for 10-20lbs gags?

Ive been using alot of live shrimps on 1/0 hooks on knocker rigs with 1-3 oz egg sinkers depending on current and i literally have yet to catch a sheep. Been fishing right up against pilings. Its netted me 3 tiny 15” gags but thats about it. I think the pinfish and grunts are just fucking decimating my bait as soon as i cast it in?? Idk. Im new to this.

Whats the best setup for using a spoon?

I don't know anything about fishing in the America's but 50lb braid is pretty thick stuff and you will cast further using 15 or 20lb braid

Can people catch Spanish mackerel with a float and bait? Set that up on the heavy rod and just have it bobbing away while you chuck spoons

I have had 17lb pike on 15lb braid, just set the drag loose and let the pike take line as it pleases, they tire out pretty quickly.

I catch tons of them a year at Juno. Here are the lures you need.

>bubble rig with mcdonalds straw

The white crappie jig is one of the most effective producers. Use 25-30 pound mono leader to help with the sharp teeth while still remaining not too visible. Don't use wire.

This is the ultimate poor fag penny wise dollar foolish mentality. You spend hundreds on gear, flies and the time you get on the river is limited but you are going to cheap out on tippet which is the cheapest part of the equation. Imagine losing a lunker because you wanted to save 10 dollars.

How does mending or loops have anything to do with the way the fly is moving in micro currents under the water. You can mend perfectly and if the tippet is too large for the fly it will still drag.

The loop knot allows free motion of the fly, and 5x is good down to #24 and even #26 in all my experience.

If you are trying to catch stocked trout then it doesn’t matter but if you fish a heavily pressured tail water with wild fish it can make a huge difference. It comes down to the thickness of the tippet compared to the fly. A thin diameter tippet gets pushed around less than a thicker diameter tippet. Because the tippet is in different micro currents than the fly if the diameter is too large compared to the size of the fly it will pull the fly unnaturally. Nothing mending or loop connections can do about it.

Just because two lines are listed at the same diameter doesn’t mean they have the same breaking strength or the same suppleness. Pic related.

How about this? Lures not made any more that you miss? Flying Lures, because I caught well on them and Sebile Flat Belly Walkers. The Sebiles can still be found, but the design is discontinued for all I can tell.

The diameter difference between 5x and 6x is about 0.001 inches, which is about all the more that calipers are accurate to. We're talking about an absolutely negligible amount of change to thickness of the line, but that 0.001 inches of extra material adds 2-3 pounds of breaking strength to the tippet. Those extra few pounds make a huge difference, it could be the difference between a big brown throut tangling you up in a log jam and having enough muscle to turn him, or between playing a fish to death and returning it back to the water healthy.
As for regular mono or flouro not being good youd think all these pro anglers winning tournaments would be scrambling to buy fly tippet if it was noticeably better.

.006 is 20% thicker than .005 so it does make a big difference. Flies also sink faster and have better action with good tippet vs bottom of the barrel line. If you look at guys like Lance Egan who compete at the international level I guarantee they aren’t using something you can find on the shelf at Walmart.
If you are talking bass fishing line isn’t as important at thicker diameters and for fish who aren’t line shy. If it works for you when you catch stockers that’s great but I notice a big increase in catch rate when using 6x or even 7x on the rivers I fish.

Right when theyre stocked, its crazy to see. Once i caught a wave of trout that were stocked a mile upstream, they flowed down into me. I caught 20 in a row, every cast with a spinner. They were stocked, then it started raining, it pushed them downstream to me, it was a magical day. I had no idea they had just been stocked earlier that day.

I have been trying out some Trilene sensation because I wanted some low stretch mono. It delivers on the having less stretch part but the issue it has on fresh line the line twist is absolutely brutal, the worst I have seen from any line. Once you get it broken in after two fishing session its great but the initial spooling and use makes you want to kill yourself. Been thinking about just switching to braid but it seems like a huge pain constantly having to do line to line knots to tie on a leader.

The knot itself isn't so much an issue(I like uni to uni). It just seems like a hassle working with it on the water. For me the rigs I use would need different leader lengths therefore the cost of switching would involve cutting off the leader at the main line and re-doing everything. On my salt water combo I use braid but most of my rigs work with a swivel so I just pre-tie the leader end of the rig at home and only have to make a single tie to my swivel when I am out fishing.

What rigs are you using? A uni-uni should go through your eyelets without much fuss, so just tie on 6 feet of leader and don't sweat having "too much" leader on your rigs that need less.

Some major ones that are going to cause issues is slip floats and drop shots compared to say just throwing on a jig head. It might not be not actually be bad in practice but I like to keep it simple because some days especially when it comes to light line it just doesn't want to cooperate with you.

Tbqh 99% of the time I use 5x first to see if I can get away with it and then result to 6x, I never ever use 7x. Since I'm hiking into the mountains to waters that people typically never fish, 5x works all the time. The smallest size fly I fish with is a 22 though.

But a lot of the time I fish 6x anyway because I don't see a problem with fighting the fish with lighter line.

Yup, Atlantic Canada. I fish the Saint john river, The Kennebecasis part of the river system is basically a fjord and can get 50 meters deep with salt water. A day's drive to the north and you can catch burbot in grand lake, which is connected to the river.

I haven't gone for burbot yet but from what I hear they are pretty similar to their hake cousins, both are related to cod fish

For brook trout in the middle of the woods I will use 4x sometimes as those streams tend to have a ton of snags and small stream brook trout will eat mostly anything. For educated brown trout I usually end up using 6x but sometimes 7 if the water is low and clear.
I’ve never had a problem with playing a fish to death that is usually boomers who you see running all over the river chasing a fish like they have a whale attached to the end of the line. When I get into a 7x situation I usually have my euro rod which has a ton of tippet protection due to the soft tip.

Is the better reply. As far as the tides go they are just under a meter for the river but they are several meters where the ocean hits the shore. The reason the tides are so low on the river is because all the water has to pass through a tiny opening called reversing falls, so the water level on either side of the falls can be way higher than the other. On high tide the water from the ocean rushes in, on low tide the water from the river rushes out.

Fishing at the reversing falls is amazing because every fish that comes to the river from the ocean enters through the opening, but you can only do it during slack tide. There are shitloads of stripped bass people catch there

This is probably a dumb question, but I got my fishing licence (EU fag) a few years ago.
Thing is the licence just covers legal shit and none of my aquantances or family member can fish. As a result I feel like I lack a lot of important knowledge (I know how to set up some bait and shit, but I rarely catch anything, mostly because I just go somewhere to the water without any idea where the fuck to look.). I feel like most people learn these things from their friends/parents/grandpa, but I have no such opportunity.
Any good books you guys would recommend to an absolute beginner? Mostly about where to find fish, but every bit of general knowledge is appreciated. Bonus if it covers rivers (especially european ones), but more general approaches work too.

Yeah that's because most Googans don't know that the mainly Mono holds memory to the spool its coming off of so the line needs to go on the reel the way the line is coming off the spool. Another thing you can do is take the reel spool off after and put the reel spool with the new line in warm water this will help reform the line memory. Went kayak fishing, didn't catch anything but saw a fuckload of minnows, shad, dink bluegill, and nothing eating them but seagulls. There was one area of the lake where there was such a thick cloud of shad in the 1-2 inch range that you couldn't see the bottom in 3 feet of water.

Tips for targeting bass in clear cold water? I went for trout last weekend, didn't get any but saw a ton of huge bass cruising around and sitting dormant(?) on the bottom. The water stays cool most of the year but lily pads do grow in the shallows in some areas, where lily pads haven't created a buildup of organic material the bottom is mostly sand and gravel

It's a 7'3 ultralight. I've been working on thread patterns and wanted to try a triforce. It's just a panfish rod. I still need to put a trim band or two on there to break up the green and then epoxy it. Doing that same green with gold trim bands on the guides to keep withLoZ colors.

a minimal amount. if you want to get in to the whole one hand spey thing you can get a commando head, or you can get a regular sink tip line, or you could just run a poly leader on your normal floating line. throw on a wooly bugger or some similar baitfish or leech imitation in the 2-3 inch range, cast across and slightly down stream, make an upstream mend, and let it do it's thing. or if you want to be autistic like me a 10-11 foot 6 or 7 weight switch rod with a skagit head is a blast once you learn to cast it. pic related is one of my favorite steelhead flies.

I sometimes use an LC, but usually I use the shore jigs like those jigparas or other jdm models in 15-40gr. You can send them way farther than a jerkbait and get out past the breakers. You can work the whole water column with them at different speeds by jerking them with a steady cadence like a walking bait, burning them to the top and letting them sink or popping them vertically on the retrieve and letting them fall again. They usually come rigged with an assist on the top and a treble on the bottom, I remove the treble and that cuts down 80% of the salad and I very rarely miss a hookup. Removing the treble reduces the chance of hooking the reef too if you're around rocks. So far I've caught all 3 bass on em, macks, jack mackerel, baby halibut, sculpin, and rat yellows locally. I caught a half dozen species in baja on em too. I don't know if you follow Afran on YouTube about warbaits fishing (recommended if you don't), but this Jap guy Junichi Numata is kind of the equivalent for shore jigging if you want an overview on the style.

I'm liking it a lot, i spent a day casting bitsy minnows looking for crappies on Tuesday
they cast amazingly, even 30 or 40 feet in to the wind, and i think the whippyness helps. i don't know how much the microwave guides are doing but they definitely are not hurting anything. there was a little bit of a learning curve to get a good cast with it though, in the beginning of the day i slapped the water a few times, but once i started casting a little more up and a little less out i noticed my distance improve and i stopped slapping the water. i've yet to catch a fish on it, but i dont feel under gunned at all considering i was able to pull my fat arse and a 12 foot kayak 30+ feet with it to go unsnag my lure from a tree.

Corbina fishing is where it's at starting late May. Not as sexy as catching a halibut, but I would eat it over halibut any day. Just find a beach with sand crabs and dig up a few thumbnail sized specimens, preferably with orange eggs on em, and bait them on a #6 or #8 octopus hook and a 1/4-1/2oz bullet sinker on a carolina rig. Fish it on a cheap spinning reel with 20lb braid to 6 to 12lb fluoro and cast it out past the second set of breakers and slow retrieve while keeping tension. Swing on ANY nibble you feel even though you'll look like a kook swinging your rod all the time. Corbina feed by crunching crustaceans and slurping the pieces so it's hard to get a hookset. I use a 9' steelhead rod rated 6-17lb, but anything at least 7' is fine. I never use waders, but I have an old set of scuba booties with rubber soles that I wear whenever I'll be somewhere rocky or fishing off the jetty.

Ended up going out for pike and got skunked didn’t even get a follow. I usually fish for trout this time of year so I went to the areas I normally catch pike in the summer and didn’t sniff a bite. What should I be doing in spring? I was fishing a full intermediate line and varied my retrieve as well as how long I let the fly sink still no takes.
It was a nice day to be float tubing at least.

Bays, shallow water and wherever the wind is blowing. Look for the warmest water. Suspending flies and leech patterns are my favorite for spring. Slow retrieve with a few fast twitches if the fish is interested.

After striking out in my normal spots I kicked over to a shallow area where a brook dumps into the lake. At first it was windless but then the wind was blowing towards the end I was fishing. I was snagging moss on the bottom but still nothing.
I didn’t focus to much on tying for pike this winter since I usually start tying for them as trout season winds down so I ended up fishing pike bunnies in white and red/yellow, deceivers in white and chartreuse and some bigger clousers I had left over from last year. Need to do some more tying before I go back over there.

I have caught them on top water before. During the spawn they get pretty aggressive. Best method though is placing cut blue gill or shrimp on a Kale hook. Shits a blast.

Finally did it bros. Caught one of each common trout species on it's corresponding color of panther martin inline spinner:
Black and yellow for brook
Yellow and red for brown
Rainbow for rainbow
Also don't by the panther martins with the red clad hooks. They bend like paperclips.

Sorry photo got rotated. You would be surprised how vibrant the ecosystem is down here. I've come across at lease seven different species in this tunnel alone. I've even seen a 20+ inch white sucker. Those fuckers move like ghosts in the night and spook even easier. The only catching I've done down here has been a few yellow bullheads and a dink sucker. I found that dead drifting red wigglers on a #14 is pretty effective. The fish down here spook at anything besides bait. Probably seen a lifetime of plastic float past their faces and know the smell to well.

One is a canoe guy, the other has a small Zodiak. I also have a canoe. Most people don't cut the boat but rig it so the transponder hangs over the side on an arm. You can also get suction cups/straps that work pretty well.

I used the set in pic related, so the yellow and red body has a silver blade. Still not sure if the color really matters. I never have trouble catching trout on inline spinners. I just tried to match lure color to trout species for fun this time.

Meth, it isn't tourist season yet so there's fuckall to do on the cape. I always start the season with small white paddletails on 3/8-3/4 oz jigheads. Take your pick of Savage Gear Sandeels, Keitechs or Cocahoe Minnows.

It's a universally effective color, it's great.
Water temperature is around 41 degrees right now, when it gets to around 45 I'll start fishing the bayside and the bite usually really turns on around 50 degrees.

Let me tell you the duct seal through the hull works really well if you can leave it in there full time. I took mine in and out everytime since canoes have no hidey holes like yaks and it lives on the roof of my truck. That was messy and inconvenient.

I'm the telescopic rod defender on here, so I'll weigh in. I've been using telescopic rods for roughly 2 decades. It started out of necessity, but they travel so well that I prefer them in my travels. I looked into both the KastKing and Plusinno, but I was not super impressed. This is coming from a guy who has landed 5 foot sharks on a Coleman Telescopic, among other things. I found some Hurricane Makos cheap and still use them, but in my recent search, I decided I wanted carbon blanks and stainless steel eyelets for my salt travels, and went with the Whistytwig Lost in the Right Direction rods. Weird name, yes. I got 2 x 7 ft 6 in rods, and one 9 foot rod. These things are STOUT, but with a nice sensitive tip. I plan to use the 9 foot for smaller baits like gulp shrimp for better casting distance. The smaller rods will be used for trolling lures and tossing heavier stuff like spoons and spooks. Your choice is yours alone, and depends on what you plan to fish for. I definitely don't recommend ceramic eyelets though.
