>>2054468>Are any anons here employed on container ships/the shipping sector in general? What's it like? Could you recommend it and if so how should someone go about getting a job there?Ex-Merchant Navy, used to work on container ships. Have travelled the Suez canal three times. Was fun and I recommend it if you want to travel and make money. Wages are average but you don't pay for food or accommodation while at sea so save money that way.
Most western shipping companies have a western officer corp and third world enlisted staff. So if you want to do international merchant marine you need to apply for an officer job.
There are two career options, deck or engineering. Basically steering the ship and dealing with the navigation (or running into the side of a canal) and running the engine room and maintaining the vessel. Engineering has more options if you don't want a career at sea forever.
I applied straight out of high school, was taken on as an engineering cadet and did a HNC marine engineering. A vocational course which mixed time in a training school with trips at sea.
