Me? I cut about two cords of lodgepole pine and about half a cord of juniper for my wood stove.

Are you fucking retarded, if you knew anything about wood stoves it is that you should clean them every six months. Softwoods build up creosote much faster than hardwoods. You clean your chimney regardless of what kind of wood mix you burn.

Umm.. could I get a decent recommendation for chainsaw? I should be cutting mostly pine and nothing too too wide. Never fell trees before. I'd really rather not pay more then 300 if I don't need to.

don't have a pic of the woodpile but in this here shot you can see the stump of a 2' birch alongside a chunk a heavy part of it we used as a splitting stump. should last us awhile methinks

Only need firewood at my vacation house/country cottage, so I don't need that much. Which is why I settled for spruce this year, since we were cutting down some of them anyway for other reasons.

I do have some good birch left though, to mix it up with when need be.

What difference does that make? I split would for next year, hell even 2 or 3 years in advance, and its all split before seasoning. The only wood I would season and pile un-split would be birch, if it's green as hell. The wood he has piled is fucking mint, ready to go.

While I can't speak to Spruce, Ponderosa and Pinion Pine both split much easier when cured vs. green.

I 'reckon Spruce is similar.

So let me get this straight if you were to get a year's worth of whichever pine you desire, you pile an entire year's worth un-split. You then proceed to dismantle this year's supply after you've let it season for however long you desire, split the whole lot, then re-pile the whole year's worth of firewood? I'm not calling you a liar or anything, but are you fucking serious? You find splitting unseasoned would so difficult it's an easier course of action to pile it twice?

2-3 years is a long time. I'm sure it makes some change in the dryness of it, don't know how much though. Probably not too much.
Partially i depends on what wood you're talking about. But if you process the wood correctly you can pretty much cut down the tree in late winter/early spring and use it during the next winter, and still have the moisture level as low as 15% or so, lower is probably possible.
Storing the wood for too long and you'd risk affecting the "burn value" (don't know the correct english term) as well.

You should check your chimney on a regular basis either way, since you can't be 100% sure and a chimney fire is not something you want to take a risk on.

I have three separate stacks of wood, oen for each season. By the time the back stack is rotated to the front, instead of white/red its now black/dark brown. burns like a charm errytime and much better compared to fresh wood. But then again, almost all my wood is old oak/ash wood (pennsylviania)

Most have other sources of heat here too. But they keep stoves for two reasons really. It heats the house far quicker than other sources and it can be quite cozy.

I'm pretty sure you're correct; the stuff is called creosote, I believe. The sappier woods put out a lot more than classic hardwoods, but it's still a good idea to clean your chimney every so often.

Generally speaking you get more creosote the higher the moisture level there is in the wood and the lower temperature you're burning the wood in (which often can be regulated with the air flow).

And spruce/pine are actually two types of wood that burns with very little creosote. So hardwood doesn't have to be better than softwood.

Muh poytbelly was my sole heater for the first year, then added a kerosene heater. Was nice to not have to get up at night and add wood!

I'd come home from being in town all day, cold wind blowing, cabin super cold.Crank up the wood stove and get the flu pipe glowing red!

Used that stove everyday and night during winter, never has an issue with creasote.

Juniper and Pinion.

I personally don't cut that much, and what I cut is close enough to carry/use a wheelbarrow.
