on a somewhat similar note, any natives here? have you been out hunting buffalos on horseback? any chance for a pale devil to get in on that action?

I've been on many shitty (not maintained, still scenic), narrow trails where I thought, hmm a horse would be nice to have here.

A local in West Virginia told me horses are actually great with narrow, steep canyon-like sections of trail, but it is all about balance and she has been thrown off her horse enough times her husband told her to stop hiking by horse.

That said, horses are allowed in wilderness areas I believe, and we have seen horse poop sometimes, but not really in backcountry or wilderness, and I've never actually encountered someone riding a horse along a trail.

Fuck horses right up their clipping clopping asses. Just bought two Tennessee Walkers. Fiance has been bitching at me about getting her a horse and how you can’t get just one and that it can be a new hobby for us and how I can use them at the field trials I don’t go to anymore and how they would be great for packing big game out for me when I hunt out west. Fuck me. 9k for the horses, already had a stock trailer and pipe fencing so can’t really bitch about that beyond the loss of space that could have gone towards some productive livestock (opportunity cost is important anons), tack, blankets, and saddle prices were an act of financial sodomy. Their upkeep is going to cost me more annually than a badass quad or boat payment would be and will be infinitely more effort. The fancy trailer will be next. Then I will lose some precious free time I normally would have spent hunting to ride a trail all day I could have driven in 20 minutes in an RZR. I will likely choose the rope soon anons.

I'd like to rent one in the future and chill in an open plain and play cowboy camping overnight

I believe the correct term is horse packing.
I know someone who works with a hunting/camping outfitter in the Rockies and they mainly horse pack everything. It sounds like the best way to camp in the back country. Horses can carry way more shit, those guys go out there with coolers, cots, camp chairs and eat steak with beer like kings. Sounded pretty based.

There's two different groups of horse people, those that own horses for a useful purpose like horse packing, work or equestrian and people that have horses as pets which burn through hay. The people who treat them like pets are larps and usually have the manors of the assholes we all share the road with.
