Hi all, anyone used a Gerber double down? Looks like a butterfly knife style machete, seems like a good way to pack it down, but also like it might be over engineered/too many parts that could fail. It’s shilled all over YouTube, so I can’t tell if it’s innovative or trash.

I tried one of these. Its shit and the blade gets loose after some time. It also just feels horrible in hand. Plus trying to flip it is pretty autistic.

Too short to be an actual machete, but they call it a machete, shit
Idk how many times it has to be said
If you want to beat on a knife go full tang, with steel from a decent company
If you want to pound it without worrying about it, then you're going to pay out the nose for something like a Busse, Bradford, Firecraft, Survive!, Carothers, etc.
You can buy inferior knives and be ok in most circumstances
There have been plenty of ESEE's that have broken
There have been far fewer Busse's (only 2 I've seen proof of online, one was used as a pry bar on a trailer hitch)
TLDR
If you want a folder, get it for whittling and or edc tasks
If you want to baton the shit out of things don't get a folder
If you really want to baton the shit out of anything, then you're going to pay $$$

Have you tried the short version? Virtuovice has a vid where he xrays the tangs on a bunch of hidden tang knives, and the Kabar Short had one of the best.

nope. only got 3 non-kitchen knives ($5 walmart machetes are disposable and don't count):

kitchen knives are also pretty good. full tang, mid-high carbon stainless, chicago cutlery I think.

this convo reminds me to destroy the stray sharpening file so my retard roommate doesn't attempt to use it on my knives. I dipped out during the plague before using my 3000/8000 whetstone and he bought new kitchen knives with thin blades, really short tangs, and plastic handles. already broke the paring knife trying to cut cheese or something

I was the person talking about the wenger rangergrip in the other edc thread
I've beat on it daily for over a decade
If I was on a budget and lacked a good fixed blade I'd easily get a Morakniv Garberg (80$)
Even their standard 20$ blades are pretty damn tough
The Garberg is tougher, its actually full tang
I'd take a Busse over a Mora, but I'd take the mora over anything else $100 and under
Check out the other knife thread, some anon posted a video of 2 guys beating on a cheap mora and it took it in stride

You need to be wearing gloves when you put some ooomph on that thing, it's gonna bite, already seen two reviewers mention that as well as the locking tab popping open on hard swings and the front portion near the hilt being too large and boxxy to be comfortable.
