They typically do it with skeletonized knives, for grip and having "survival" cordage.

It's a decent grip material. People have been using wrapped handles for as long as knives have been a thing, paracord is just the modern equivalent of leather or linen or whatever.

makes sense.
I wrapped my ka-bar with leather cord because I found the grip a little too round and this just makes indexing it easier

I know. My point was why make a knife massively impractical for this major application of knives? Just carry some paracord, hell wrap the sheath in it

Thanks. It is a larp blade not going to lie. Ill use in on canoe trips and on winter camping trips to process wood with a silky saw so maybe 5-6 days a year lol. I'll bring it fish and foraging for the larp as well. I do a lot of backpacking and carry a Opinel 4 which is like a 2 inch blade to cut repair tape. I hardly make fires backpacking 10 months out of the year. It's just to much work after 15-20 miles per day.

Holding tangs is uncomfortable, even when rounded corners, as they just aren't thick enough. It's a simple way to give a comfortable handle.

It's also a cheap thing if you buy knife blanks for 1/4 the cost of a fully made knife from a company.
