yeah eh! its different than Cape Breton for sure, but there is some overlap due to the geographic proximity, with scottish tunes or variations of them being part of the island repretoire. the crisp and snappy scottish style is of course what Cape Bretoners are known for, whereas the Magdalen islands is much like the Gaspe a little further up the coast and west PEI where theres a heavy french influence, the bowing is more of a slurred sawstroke. Legally canada has only existed for 40 years independently. I have definitely gone hunting or fishing less than 3 hours from toronto, on a weekend, and not seen a single person. Though not at a marked trail in a major provincial park.

Does anyone know how to find places to go practice bushcraft in BC? I got my friend really into it and we want to go camping in the bush where we can build things and not be disturbed, and not anger the government too much.

Is it just a matter of driving up to crown land and hiking in to a spot? Is there a way to find known entrances and trails? I think he's going to want to stay somewhat close to his vehicle, unless that's not an option at all.
Also how to avoid hunters and popular hunting locations?

If anyone can help with any of this it is very much appreciated by us both.

Otherwise yeah, any crown land is fine if you're not fucking the place up. Respect fire bans during summer and at least consider warnings about backcountry areas or wildlife, when they're there they're there for a reason. Hunters tend to like cutblocks or powerline clearings but it rarely matters, if you actually hike any distance off trail you're unlikely to see anyone. Wear blaze orange during hunting season as a precaution I guess. I don't think it makes a ton of difference, if they're dumb enough to shoot at things they can't see an orange hat won't help.

Yeah, I found the source, it's a map of electoral ridings by population with all the low pop ones colored yellow and the rest consolidated.
So looking at this one, the bigger the square is for the colour, the lower the population density. That one makes the Kootenays look the same as vancouver when there's only two towns in the whole area above 10k people, and only one above 20k. If you were more precise with your colouring you could probably cut the coloured area to 1/3 that size

Certain Gods are tied to specific geophysical formations and locations, yes, but it is just as cringe for a person of non-indigenous ancestry to worship and revere indigenous Gods and spirits. I'd say Canada's comparable to Aus in terms of "animals that will fuck you up if you're not careful". Moose and bears, even elk if you're a retard, are probably more likely to fuck you up than anything Australia has except maybe snakes, or crocs if you're in croc country.
I'd say snakes are more of a threat than bears overall just by virtue of being plentiful and not always fleeing, but snakes aren't curious and will never seek you out like a bear might if it smells food.

I was using an image taken from the same site as the post I was quoting, as I stated they differ from site to site but look close and you'll see that the majority of the northern US is roughly the same as the majority of southern canada and you can find colder climates as far south as 35N in the west. I wasn't comparing specifically to WA state though I can if you want.

No it really doesn't, probably half of every northern US state bordering canada (ballpark estimate of ~25-30 million people) has equivalently cold or colder climates in winter lows and record lows to Toronto alone, also I should mention that some of the extra cities you added are more than 53N and ~75% of all canadians (ballpark estimate of around 20-25 million people) live below 49N in a climate similar or identical to Toronto or slightly the colder Montreal/Quebec region. The list could go on for hundreds or thousands of towns and cities in the US colder than GTA/southern Ontario in average low/record low but many of them don't have easily available data and I would have to sift through the NOAA database and 2bh that's too much effort for me.

Interestingly most maps tend to give the optical illusion that Maine is farther north than the US-Can 49N border when it is 2' farther south and all of S Ontario's and S Quebec's population is also farther south than it. Another example of this optical illusion is that even the OR-WA border (44-46N) is farther north than the entire Ontario peninsula.

We can both cherry pick various examples of smaller cities etc but it will become exhaustive, both are cold though most canadians live in moderate climates (relatively speaking, compared to extremes in both the US and Canada). I could even add another statistic to show just how south most canadians live, over 50% of the total population of canada lives below 46N. The point is that most canadians live in a climate comparable to the original cities I mentioned (relatively moderate overall), ie a comparable climate to the majority of the northern US. And there is also much colder places than GTA in the US much farther south in avg annual and avg jan low air temps. Go consult my small list up a few posts and compare them to GTA if you feel otherwise.

When it comes to comparing cold temperatures the only thing that really matters much is windchill and precipitation, when exposed to -40C in either dry or wet climates it feels mostly the same when it's that low, windchill makes probably the biggest difference in felt temperature in the negatives. And there really isn't that much difference between the coldest temps in the US and Canada in the west, for example the record low in the lower 48 is less than 5F from the record in NWT, BC, ON, NU, and SK. And in the eastern humid climates the northeast and the midwest US mirrors the canadian climates below 49N. Extremely cold average lows in the US can happen at much lower latitudes than canada even though the summers will be warmer.

Southern Ontario is geographically regarded as below 45N, even though I am lumping everything below 49N because guess what, it's still warmer than the US below Timmins, 18 US states have *multiple* locations colder than Timmins for example. Climate has many nuances, being coastal or continental is one of them, Timmins is extremely continental Spokane is a coastal Mediterranean climate. Winthrop has nearly the same record low but warmer avg low to Timmins. Embarass MN is colder than Timmins at nearly the same latitude and is also extremely continental and humid like Timmins. The US just has more extreme climate and temperature variations and geographical differences.

It is the opposite, disregarding latitude means there are more Americans living in a colder or equally cold climate (by record or avg winter lows) as the majority of canadians. If you said that more canadians live farther north than Americans then that statement is beyond doubt true. US geography allows for both extremely cold and extremely hot climates at sometimes abnormal latitudes (largely because of either unique geographic features, extreme elevation, or unique ocean/atmospheric currents).

For example Winthrop is the coldest on average inhabited place in WA although there are colder on average uninhabited places all over WA, for example Rainier averages lows of -19c in jan and -15c yearly.
