If you’re going to spend a lot of time paddling, save up and buy something better targeted to the kind of paddling you plan to do. Trying to do open water paddling in a flat bottom boat that tracks poorly is an exercise in frustration. Also, check Craigslist. Rotomolded boats are pretty tough, so used ones are usually still in decent shape, though you may have to replace the seat, some deck hatches, and hardware. I’d recommend renting first to see if you’re actually into it, but rental boats often aren’t great and you may leave feeling like you didn’t really enjoy it when a nicer boat may have provided a much more enjoyable experience.
