The cans can be hammered flat and used as shingles or hammered out more and used as foil for cooking your freshly killed marmot. The bottles can be used as canteens and thank god someone built a fire pit. The twisties from bread bags are useful for suturing wounds. Here's the haul I left for the next bushcrafter when I was in the Weminuche wilderness. Half the fun is finding new uses for things.

Well I never knew this until now, but it explains why I often see these crappy-looking "survival" shelters 20' from the trail.

Please stop doing this. You bushcrafters may not have gotten the memo, but Leave No Trace means "don't leave any traces of your presence." That includes building permanent or semi-permanent structures.

op, british islands are shit for camping, population density, private fucking forests, fences etc. France is better, just don't make fires though. As for traces, shit is the most tasty food for the trees, modern toilet paper disintegrates quite quickly.

I think this is the basic problem with camping / hiking everywhere in the old country. Domesticated man, there is no diversity, no big game, its all unnatural, like a big euro garden.

There are only a few locations left on earth where you can really get away from that, even Everest is polluted with millions of oxygen bottles en-route to the camps.

You need to find something to add adrenaline to the venture as being out just doesn't cut it anymore. Being in NA I usually pick a place with at least some Grizzlies, maybe some rattlesnakes, far enough away from civ where you are responsible for your actions.

Didn't stop me from camping wild solo along the Gower Coastline. Its supposed to be patrolled regularly by rangers as well.
Pitch late and ideally leave early.
Don't leave trash.
if your going to build a fire conceal it. If you can't perhaps you shouldn't.
Don't camp in the open unless you want to risk it.
Leaving early is not a huge issue as you can usually just talk your way out of that.
Some times when I've been turfed out of a camp I just wander around at night if its nice enough I sleep out on a bench or make progress in the dark. Its quite enjoyable to see the world in the darkness once in awhile.
When dawn breaks I go down to the beach and sleep alongside the sunbathers not a issue.
(although don't fall asleep in the sun)

There are some places where its okay to camp wild and you wont be bothered.
Such as Canals. There is enough space to put up a tent along a canal I've walked the Kennet and Avon canal at least a dozen times never had a problem. Don't fish without a license or you'll get in trouble.

I always break down my shelters. I made them from dead trees. I use natural hemp or sisal cords.

Sometimes I cut fresh branches because of the leafs. For future shelters I will use a tarp or a poncho.

Yeah, I think I see a difference between leaving some maps and full water bottles at a specifically designated way-station of some kind and just leaving empty bottles or cans. True an experienced person could make use of just about anything, but most people are going to be like "fuck, who threw a kegger and left all their shit?"

Further, while I whole-heartedly support re-using plastic bottles, (especially since I resent the fuck out of people selling a free resource) LEAVING a bottle behind for someone ELSE to use doesn't make as much sense. I don't know what was done to that bottle, or how long it's been sitting here, and I'm more likely to just trash the damn thing or throw it in recycling than use it myself.
