because they're designed to be an effective tool, not compromised for the sake of being lightweight and compact. you're better off spending less for a better tool. i really do get sick of everything being reinvented as an inferior /out/ version for 3x the price. yes, some things are better compromised for packing but not tools

I love my estwing but I think fiskars offers a better camping axe because it's significantly lighter weight for what you're going to be doing at camp

I broke one, back when they first came out, got an Estwing soon after, had it been super cold when that happened it would have been bad but it was just cold. Piling up pine boughs both under and on top of the sleeping bag made it tolerable.

I agree with them. I sliced a fuckton of wood for my fireplace, with different axe off course, and buttoning it down when its stuck only makes it worse, same goes for wiggling it to the sides, it will just break.
Up and down movements are the only way to take out stuck axe, and one should never ever batonychopchop, that's just plain stupid.

if you actually use an ax at all you know you need a good wood handle for muscle fatigue from vibration. wood handle + good steel + proper head design + proper heat treat makes a good ax.

doesn't really matter if its swedish or not. condor, gransfors bruks, or husquavarna are good choices.

A good hatchet must be a cutter and a splitter, research proper head shapes to know why. That seems to be more like a maul than anything to me, so that means it'll be awesome as splitting but not so good at anything else.

I have a Gränsfors and the difference with these camping substitutes is huge. My rule of thumb would be to bring a real axe for when I need to chop wood and some axe-shaped utensil in case I need to chop wood

This. I have the Outdoor and large forest axe. One of the nicest axe brands there is, especially for bushcraft. Extremely easy to cut with, bites well into the wood. I understand why the small forest axe is so popular, I personally went with both ends of the spectrum instead of the one inbetween.
