Not sure if this the right sub for snowboarding but I had question about snowboard gear I want to buy.

I don't have the funds to buy high end gear and found something that is clearance from Volcom I was interested in buying. Its a shell with 15,000mm / 10,000 for waterproof and breathability.... I going to be boarding in Washington state and wanted to buy something more water proof. Do you think this will be sufficient? I really can't afford gortex garments right now. The jacket I'm looking at it marked down from $230.00 to $86.99 after e-coupon.

I personally like Volcom gear and have pants that will zip in with this jacket.

If its a good deal im going to buy it being I need something for the season. I will save for gortext pants.

Volcom = paying for a name

Generally I wear a soft shell opting for a Lightweight goretex storm shell. This gives you far more versatility if you want to get into backcountry.

Check out second assent in Ballard, they sell used gear and have great prices on factory overruns. Also Water proof pants are far more important than a waterproof jacket.

Outdoor Research and Patagonia make top tier gear at decent prices.

You said paints are more important then jacket for waterproof. That was why I was saving for higher end pants.

The shells listed on that site are less or no more waterproof then the volcom one I listed. The OR shells was 10k/7k and the patagucci was 10k/10k... bother less then the jacket I was going for and none of them have snow skirt or pants to jacket interface. They cost more and some are used..? have hard time thinking getting less and used is better then new.

And trust me I know how good they gear they make is but I can't spend $200-$300 shell and expect to get the other gear I need.

By what you suggest do you think the volcom would be fine?

do you mean "board"? At least try to fit in a little.
By the way I'd say use /out/ for touring/freeride/pow, and /asp/ for anything park.
that's how I'd do it. Though I'm not really sure about the current quality of /asp/.

That's absolutely true, but in a clearance sale, that point becomes moot.

I don't know about the volcom, but it seems decent enough. If you can, go to a local store and see if they have it. Check out the sizes (is the snow skirt tight enough for your skinny body?) and other features you find necessary.

As for features, I made pretty good experiences with 686 and Holden jackets. So if you find one on clearance, you might want to consider that.

You don't really need waterproof gear for snow sports... A high degree of water "repellency" will come in handy, but the main result of waterproofness will be that less of your sweat will evaporate and you'll get wet from the inside.

Most ski/snowboard jackets have ventilation under the arms, and jackets with a 15,000+ water resistance usually have at least 10,000 breathability (whatever the units are).

Generally, I found - for the worst days - high water resistance does indeed make quite the difference. And if it's cold enough, your jacket (and more importantly your pants) might be covered in an ice shell sooner or later, making the entire breathability of the fabric useless.

Although it doesn't really matter if you just ride groomed slopes and never fall.
It doesn't matter a whole lot either if you just ride 20 days a year.

I will be riding pacific northwest almost exclusively. Specifically the Summit in Washington. The snow on the cost can be very heavy and often its rain and snow. It really is the type of snow that is good to have options.

I'm saving for nice shell pants and I would like a high quality soft shell jacket also. Plan on getting that spring time during sales. I can use it on my summer backpacking trips and it will be nice for cold / clear day's next year on the slopes.

I do have light wight nano puff hoody from Patagucci and it works great on dry days but it wont hold up to the wet snow days that is more often here in Washington.

Yeah pit vents are a must on shells for me. I do boot hike some light back country to get fresh lines on pow days.

would rather have higher end stuff like e-vent or gor but I get by with this for now. My fault for now saving more and being lazy at work =|

going to stick around this board here and get some ideas on backpacking / survival gear I would like to start buying.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the basic gear that you need. I have a board. It doesn't have a place to put your feet. And I have goggles. What else do I need?

At a minimum bindings and snowboard boots.

If you don't have, gloves/mitts, a warm hat, a buff or neck gaiter, and a helmet if you're into that.

Also get a good base layer, again second assent is the place to go, I think they have the cheapest capaline in town. Also to polartec milsurp stuff is pretty good for the price check ebay. Your nanopuff makes a good insulating layer on cold days. For years I rode in a pair of milsurp Dutch goertex pants I picked up at federal Army Navy Surplus in Belltown.

One of the few companies that is still privately owned, Yvonne Choinard still has control, make half their gear in the US, everything is recyclable and they give hella money to keep the /out/doors perserved and accessable. Plus they have great sales
