I always see them on gear sites and they're usually 1k+ but I don't see the reason. If you're bringing that size suv innawoods why not sleep in that? I can comfortably sleep in my coup so why bother with a tent that's so expensive and I assume difficult to set up.
Anyone here use these? Are there obvious benefits I'm missing?

I think large tent and a camp bed would be better. It would probably weigh about the same and would be a lot more comfortable.

The other benefit is getting the tent level in uneven terrain, they're mostly for overlanding. They also fold back up within 5 minutes and you don't have to worry about cleaning the bottom, dust, or mud.

They would have been an excellent idea if they were invented/popular 20 years ago when normal tents were much harder to set up with numbered tubes and whatnot that took a while to assembly. Today you can set up a small tent by throwing it into the air and watching it unfold automatically.

Anyways I know a few overlanders, and basically the whole point is that they want to use the car as part of the adventure and not just transportation. You just do it because. Like people going /out/ on dirtbikes because it's fun. I suppose there are a few cases where a roof tent might be more convenient, but otherwise seems like just another fad to me.

overlanding is the only way to transit in certain environments. Australian Outback is one environment, Nevada/Utah/Arizona desert is another environment. Anywhere where you are not going to have great or any access to water and where the terrain and distance is so great that backpacking, biking or motorcycling is risky.

They are for people who want an RV, but don't want an RV.

Imagine you want to just drive somewhere, setup camp and sleep. A tent requires flat ground and that often means an actual campground. People dream of driving up a logging road, parking beside the road and setting up camp. Like a vamping van or RV or something. But those are expensive, aren't daily drivers and so on. These car tents are a bizarre middle ground between camping in a tent or in van or RV.

Personally I WTF whenever I see these, but then I've slept in bushes and under picnic tables so I'm not that fussy.

its always there and doesnt take up space
no, you dont really notice it while driving
you keep everything you need for a night sleep inside the tent when you fold it up, can even wire up lights and stuff
depending on heigh of car and type of tent you can have them up and be in bed before a guy with a ground tent has even found his tent
...or you struggle for 15min if everything about your setup is crap
never have to worry about ground conditions
go to sleep and wake up with a view of more than just bush and grass
is incrediby comfortable

it makes no sense for someone who enjoy spending time setting up camp. i think its a boring chore so i use a roof tent.
