>Written like someone who's never been in a storm for more than 15 minutes.Listen, I'm not going to say that I'm perfect or I've never made mistakes. Pic related is one such mistake, where I wasn't careful about my site selection and rain puddled under my tarp. Fortunately, this was before I opened up my sleeping bag, so all my gear was in dry bags (except my camera, lol). That said, there were three other people in my group this particular time, all with tents, and every one of them pitched their tent in a worse spot, got worse puddling and got water into each of their tents as well.
Tarping is not for beginners or low skill level backpackers, but once you figure out what kind of soil drains well and what kind of soil is going to just get wet, what kind of overhead canopy is going to block side-blown wind and which direction to pitch your tarp in a storm, you can absolutely stay just as dry as in any tent. There is a method, and aside from making these kinds of mistakes early on when I started tarping, I have been able to stay dry through storms ever since.
The rest of your comments are rather stupid and easily addressed by reciprocating your aggravating comment with something like, "written like someone who's never been in the outdoors for more than 15 minutes." I mean, really, dude? You can't stay put on a fucking Thermarest? Jesus. I don't envy your girlfriend/wife/gay-boyfriend.
