They're mostly people who only came to CA for work in the first place and are moving back out to places they'd always rather have been now that remote working is a thing and they don't need to be physically present at their companies' Silicon Valley or LA offices. Many are also left-wing rejects from flyover states who got memed into moving here by idealized media depictions and then couldn't really make it and finally got pushed back out to wherever they came from by covid.

It's only in the last few years that they've stopped coming here in such numbers, partly because the type that would've moved to CA in the past is moving to Austin instead and in the last year because the wuflu has killed off all the shit that attracts them.
