Can we have a thread for what kits we have in altoid tins or similar sized containers?

Here is my basic medkit that will be used for backpacking. It still has room left, what else should i put in it? What else should I also have with me for a basic med kit that might not fit in there?

Can i use regular thread for an emergency suture, or should i just stick with super glue or bandaids?

If you have to ask this question you probably don't know how to differentiate between wounds that need sutures and those that don't anyway. Don't use regular thread for suture, you'll just cause an infection.

yes you can but it should only be temporary because of infection and may need replacing/cleaning every day or so in a long term situation.
had about 15 stitches a few years ago in my arm and was stitched up with some sort of plastic thread.

I would put a leatherman Micra in the open space. They are about as good a pair of scissors you'll find. Problem is, they also have tweezers and a knife(though neither as good as the stand alone ones you already have) so unless you like the idea of redundancy, you'll be packing extras of those 2. Alterantivly, you could look at the other multitools in those sizes(CS style, squirt, Geber dime, etc...) and see if one of those were more to your liking.

Athletic tape, you need athletic tape. You can put it directly over minor cuts and anything major you stick a cotton ball or other dressing and use the tape as a bandage.

The tape also supports joints and does all kinds of wonders for injuries. That stuff is magic.

I feel like I should be clear on this, unless you have the medical training to do so don't give yourself or anyone else stitches. Anywhere. You'll just make it worse, greatly increasing the risk of infection. Direct pressure and call it in or hike them out. A cut deep enough to warrant stitches is enough to evac.

Reminds me of a video I saw on /k/. Doctor doing work on patients injured on the frontline. He basically had to undo their stiches and actually clean out all the dirt and bullet fragnents the combat medics had sewed inside the bodies of the soldiers.

Simply no. Why stitch it up? If it is only a small clean cut, a steri-strip will be enough.
If it is large enough to need stitching you need professional help anyway.
Additionally: What do you think to achieve by stitching? It is for making nicer looking scars. It does Fuck-nothing for bleeding. So you have risks but no benefit.

Of course this is only trolling but I will answer it anyway: Of course. It sucks when doing something in my shed. It sucks even more if I have to work with fluids or have to sanitize my hands all the time while working.

Do you run to the Doctor everytime you have a scratch though? You simply apply a band aid and change it when it gets wet or too dirty. A more serious injury needs professionel help and maybe stitching.

Wanting to stitch yourself in the wilderness is Bullshit and no use whatsoever. No benefit, like I said, bigger risk of infection. And additionally, how many cuts are there you CAN stitch yourself? Very very few.
Most cuts or injuries will be on your hands or arms. Try stitching that. Protip: You need both hands for stitching. You could theoretically stitch up most stuff on the front of your legs. But apart from the fact that it is no use it is not really a location for this kind of injury.

nope, my 15 stiches healed up that fast years ago, it required more healing after but the wound was sealed enough to do consruction work. the gash was about 1/4 inch deep

Don't use regular thread, don't use actual sutures, don't use super glue. Just use bandaids, butterfly bandages, gauze. In regards to a small altoid tin, you have a lot of things that are overkill for the small amount of bandages you have.

You still do not realise that, even if you have needle and thread with you, it is a pretty shitty idea to try suturing your wounds in the wilderness when you clearly have no idea of the process, inspecting wounds or medicine in general.

And there is still the point that there is nothing to gain by suturing because this does not control bleeding.

not trying to control bleeding you want it to heal faster so you can get back in action quicker. long/deep gashes open up like a womans vag during childbirth. if you dont suture it it will take 10x as long to heal

The main problem I see with it is that some people may not read everything and not realize you are on of those and come to harm because they believed the shit they read. A cynic may say this is just another case of naive people getting what they deserve but I still hate to leave BS like this uncommented for the small chance that some harm may be averted this way.

If it is only superficial, fresh and clean, steri strip it or use butterfly band aids.
If it is deep enough that stitching is in question. go to a doctor who will clean it, assess it and decide for primary or secondary wound treatment.

At least this I would advise sane people to do.

You can do whatever shit you want and let natural selection run its course.

Suturing should never be done by the untrained especially in filthy conditions.
If you are two days in the back country and gash your leg, your best bet would still be keeping it clean and bandaged. For even cuts, disinfecting then new skin or surgical glue is a possibility.
Always bring a buddy, or at the very least key someone know the approx time you'll be back.

My med kit is my heaviest bit of gear. I average about 30lbs total for my multi day trips.

I'm not necessarily knocking these mini-kits, as they have some use
in learning to minimize size and weight but really, what value are they?

They're so small one can barely fit anything in them and if they're to
be used for camping, vehicle kit or BOB, one can easily carry a more
effective package of supplies that will still be very compact and light.

pic related: 17cm x 6cm x 12cm - 235g (6-5/8" x 2-3/8" x 4-3/4" - 1/2lb)

As for the city....Well I live in a large city, so driving a car is really not the best (Own a car, just decided not to drive) so I take the bus, saves me so much money.
