I've used a tent for all my life for backpacking, but needing to waterproof it every month or so has gotten tiring. I want to try tarp camping, but I don't know which tarp to choose. What inexpensive and extremely waterproof (not needing to waterproof it at all) tarp do you recommend?

Congrats on taking the tarp pill
Just go with a regular DD Hammocks 3x3 (10x10 for imperifags).
Cheap, reliable and good for getting into it.
Try different setups, see how you like it.
Personally ever since I switched to tarps I've been a lot less miserable. Tents are cold and smelly.
Why the fuck would you make a whole thread about this?

Price range?
Without knowing your budget it's hard to recommend anything specific. I would say though that you'd want to look for a few features:
>square shape
>multiple tie outs on each side
>centre loop

I use a 3x3 metre basha (tarp), inflatable mat, milsurp bivvy bag, and hammock quilt. Sometimes I carry a folding mat if it's winter or rocky.
Pic related is my usual gear sans silpoly basha, weighs just under two kilogrammes (the heavy duty milsurp bivvy being more than half of that on its own) and cost me probably around £500 in total but there's no need to spend nearly that much. Get a yoga mat, cheapo inflatable kip mat, supergrade or grade 1 milsurp bivvy bag, inflatable pillow, and any old tarp.
Easiest way to pitch a basha is one edge pegged to the ground and two corners bungied to trees in a lean-to.

Sil-nylon is dated. It’s also prone to stretching over night. Sil-poly is the way to go. It’s a more rigid material and less prone to wet out. DESU you probably won’t notice the stretch unless you’re using a hammock (hammock tarps are generally pretty big).

Stop larping and a damn straight tarp. You’re going to use whatever tarp you get in one (1) configuration every time anyway.

I definitely notice more draft but I use a argon 90 bivy for when the temps are pushing the bags rating. Some pitches handle high winds better, and you can lower the wind-facing side close to the ground.

The thermarest is very comfy, but the more important thing is to keep you insulated from the ground. Either sleep on your back or your front and you'll be comfy enough.

If you're looking for info on tarp camping I would recommend checking out jupiterhikes and andrew skurka on yt. You can get all kinds of info on tarps, pitches, site selection, knots, etc. I was thinking of recommending the borah gear silpoly 7x9 tarp, but you would have to seam seal it yourself. The tarp in this pic is a 7x9 dcf tarp from zpacks. It's not cheap, but good to go right out of the box. If you just want to get your feet wet any tarp will do. Just make sure it's factory seam sealed or taped if you don't feel like messing with any of that.

I'm familiar with the 'cornet' style of pitches. Even with the small draft, I prefer the air-flow and floor-plan of other pitches. But it is a good tip for strong prevailing winds to tuck that side underneath.

For me tarp camping is about being more immersed in my surroundings. I have a tent as well and it has it's place for sure, but sometimes it's nice to just be out in it as opposed to being in a little room. Same thing with cowboy camping. As for the weight: my tarp, bivy, lines and stakes comes in at 12oz and packs ridiculously small. You'd be hard pressed to find a tent that is comparable.

Do you use a canvas tent? You don't need to do anything to a modern synthetic tent with sil/urethane-sealed rainfly and taped seams to keep it waterproof.

yeah one of the main reasons I will take a tarp over a tent at every chance is the 'open' feeling of using them. There's something special about it. Tents feel claustraphobic.

Absolute shit, lasted about ten outings, only good as sun shade. Seams leak and the whole tarp soaks up water. No waterproofing helps. Get a DD or something proper. Its my second budget tarp and im done with this chink shit.
