I don't need awesome rock climbing ability or anything, and i have trails right behind my backyard. It's 400 bucks and the brakes dont work, but according to the ad it runs great. Perhaps the brakes are fixable? Do i really need brakes? Compared to everything else on CL i cant even find a broken one for 400 bucks, haha. Thanks for anyones help. Former ATV Guide in Sedona; you don't just want brakes, you really really NEED brakes. It's a Honda (advantage, imho). As a Guide I always prefered the 500cc's, but I had first choice of 8 bikes. Get it looked at by your Honda dealer, have him do a compression test and a run down on what it needs prior to purchase for no suprises. But it's only $500, so don't expect much, hell owner doesn't even want to fix the brakes.

TL; DR Prolly beat, after fixing the brakes, you might get 100 hrs?

Look at it this way: 100 hrs is about 5 hrs riding every other weekend for a year! Mabey more w/good routine maint.

What do you want for $500?

And just get the brakes fixed, you will prolly ride w/a passenger or camp gear.

A good rule of thumb when buying a used anything is to see what the average pricerange is. Anything extremely below is either stolen, fucked up, or there's some serious funny business.

400 is in my range. i dont mind learning how to fix stuff like brakes. i wouldnt mind putting a little money into it. as long as it runs good.

Could be something simple, might end up replacing the entire system. A lot of times it's a failed hydraulic line ($80-ish). Sometimes you get lucky and it's just some shit in a seal (Clean it up, reassemble, bleed). Might be something bigger (new caliper, maybe a master cylinder, ~$200 if you look on ebay).

Means they've been sitting for a while. It's caled 'dry rot'.

Truthfully, you could probably get $1k out of it in parts if you were to buy it. That's what I'd be doing with it. Rip it apart, take pictures, sell shit on ebay, profit.
But the brakes may be an easy fix. Take a look and see. For $400, like I said, it's worth twice that in parts.

Ever ridden a dirt bike before? The quad's going to behave like a smallbore moto with four wheels, clutch and everything.

Quads are a little more difficult than a motorcycle to work on, only because there's more stuff in the way. Front steering/suspension/axle rather than an axle bolt and forks/triple tree, but once the engine's out of the frame they're pretty similar.
If you've got a decent socket set, rattle gun (for clutch nut), gear puller, chain breaker, a couple of syringes for bleeding fluids, and some mechanical know-how (or friends that are willing to help you out, that's how Iearned most of my wrenching) you can do the work without a lot of trouble.
Search the internet for a service manual and go from there.

I'll be doing a top-end on my moto in a few months.

Front is hydraulic drum brakes, not hydroelectric.
Rear is a cable drum brake.

You will more than likely need pads/shoes on front and rear.

As for fixability/reliability: It's a honda fourtrax from the early to mid 90s. Those things never stop.

I actually sank mine while mudding along the bank of a lake. Pulled out the toolkit thats in the storage compartment, drained my carb, the motherfucker started right up.
