Later today, I'm going to an REI for the first time to buy new boots
I've never been to one before... they don't exist where I'm originally from

Some good gear, some stuff that is over priced, some stuff that ridiculous bullshit. I buy the REI brand, Lowa boots, a sleeping bag and a REI rain shell. I like their socks.I bought a bike there. The other stuff I buy is army surplus. Long ago it was not easy find high quality backpacking gear or it was prohibitively expensive. REI was there in the 70s and 80s. making possible for an average person to get good quality gear from their catalog.pre internet.

These kind of shops are good for walking in, trying out all the boots, then going home and ordering the ones you like online at the cheapest price.
From what ive seen though, in the US, shops like Rei may be the ones who sell em the cheapest anyway if you get em with a discount code.

Here in Australia, brick and mortars are almost always a ripoff cause competition is low and the specialist shops are relying on high margins.

REI's footwear selection is tolerable but they usually only have the very bottom of the high-end and don't have much that is either specialized, or actually good.
REI in general has been a huge disappointment lately, they basically just sell retarded gadgets you don't need and will never need, to people who will use them once. Beyond that, they mostly have devolved into a monger of overpriced water bottles and outdoor-chic fashion, and they have entirely neglected their specialist tools for actual outdoor activities, like climbing. They are a store that sells people the dream of being "outdoorsy" by selling them junk they can use to live vicariously though the things they imagine using them for.
