The answer really depends on what you want to catch. Fly fishing isn't always the most efficient option and this is coming from a dedicated fly angler.

bream or small fish similar to sea bass which is what I usually eat. I only want to do this to avoid buying from fishing fleets and dodgy farms so if there's an easier option then I would go for that instead

You would probably be better off using a spinning rod with worms or other bait. It wouldn't be too hard to catch bream or seabass on fly rods but bait is much easier especially for bream. A 7ft medium or medium light rod would be my recommendation.

I’m an ocean only fisherman who now finds myself in Michigan of all places for work this summer. I have a 10’ inflatable and I’m pretty close to the Titabawassee and Chippewa rivers. Seems a bit small to go out on any of the Great Lakes.

What the hell do I catch up here and what do I use? I’ve never cast into freshwater in my life.

Thanks anon. I’m really out of my element because wow it’s all different than ocean fishing. It looks like walleye and perch are the best eating fish to target? Any tips on those? Are guys chumming up there or is it sight fishing?

I have a 2.5hp for the boat so I’ll at least be able to cover some water while looking like a first time fisherman.

It’s like that in upstate NY too. GE basically dumped a shitload of PCBs into the Hudson River for 20 years, so there’s limits on fish consumption now. If it’s possible to go upstream of wherever the industrial areas were, you should be able to find cleaner waters. Find a local bait shop and see what the real scoop is - it could just be nannystate drivel and everything might be fine. To get your feet wet and get started freshwater fishing, night crawlers are the easiest. Every freshwater fish will go after them, from walleye to bass to dumbass bluegill.

What the hell. I busted out my last freezer perch for bait to catch lakers, and they were almost total no shows. People say they go up shallower this time of year until the water warms, but I couldn't find shit for lakers other than in extremely deep water that I couldn't fish effectively once the wind came up.

Nice, but that looks like a normal rainbow. The one i caught is a baby from a steelhead that came up river and mated here in metro detroit.

Pic related is a rainbow trout the same size as the steelhead smolt i caught. I believe when steelhead mate their offspring are evolved forms

I think fish are pretty fucking stupid, even squids which are apparently super smart (which i personally would never fish for for exactly this reason) are about as smart as a small dog. I don't think a bass is worth worrying over, but obviously avoid cruelty where possible.

Yeah, shore fishing from the cape cod canal. You need to wrap some athletic or bandage type tape around your finger to prevent the braid from cutting you, but modern USDM braid breaks away over its advertised test for example suffix 832 50lb breaks closer to 70 or 75. I use a Tica 10' rated 2-8 oz and it handles heavy jigs like a champ. I definitely don't have the upper body strength to really manhandle the rod and load it fully but I still get enough distance.

Interesting. I shore fish off long island and I've never even thought of casting something that heavy from shore. 2 oz is about the max I've used for bass & blues. The only time Ive ever needed that heavy of a jig is diamond jigging off a boat.

I'm assuming we're talking braid mainline. Tie a 3-5' 40-60lb fluoro leader for 2oz lures, may seem a little heavy to some, but with a short leader you aren't getting the stretch you would with a mono mainline/topshot so the line has to be a little beefier. You want the braid => leader knot outside of the tip guide on your rod.

I have plenty of other hobbies. Camping, hiking, small game hunting/trapping, and gym. For camping and hiking all of my military issued gear is sufficient. For hunting all I've needed is a decent set of camo, air rifle, a shotgun, and some box traps. My gym is free. Fishing is really the only thing I spend large sums of money on besides ammo.

I have like 3 rods per where I am going to fish that day, not my entire collection. (eg. 3 setups for creek fishing, 3 setups for fishing the bay, etc) It's also a huge trip saver if you have a gear failure you can just pick up another rod ready to fish.

yes, but depending on how much you want to hike, you got to adjust how light you're gonna pack. Like, If it's a hard hike, I'll only take what I think I must absolutely need, and if it's a really hard hike I'll ditch the bucket all together and then pack at most 4 rods and the absolute essentials in lures and weights in one box.

I don't use a step counter or GPS tracker so I don't know how much I move around when I actually fish (and I actively fish standing up the entire time) but basically for me, the first fishing spot / hole should be within a mile or so walk to get there because I know I will be walking around for a few hours at least fishing and any more than that makes it more exerting and less fun. I have scouted out spots and walked many many miles in some cheap waders lugging gear around but I certainly don't repeat that after I learn where all the spots are.

I work as a trade apprentice and my trainer/journeyman is an avid fisherman. I usually try to compartmentalize my work and personal life away from eachother but he’s offered to take me fishing when he found out I’ve never been in my entire life. I’m interested in fishing because even though he likes to smoke weed and drink a little, I’d like to start getting into some “good clean fun” type activities where I can do something satisfying and fulfilling that doesn’t have to involve me smoking or drinking.

So, I found a new lure for trout, steelhead, and bass that has been getting me huge fish and huge numbers over the past few weeks. This little spoon from custom jigs & spins is dynamite. Your retrieve a few cranks and let it flutter fall. I bought mine at fishUSA, but I'm sure you can pick them up in a bunch of places. I run the 1/32oz version for steelies and trout. The 1/8+ for bass. I feel like this sounds like an ad, but these little fuckers have made me money in a fish tourney and I wanted to give back to the thread.

I was the same way. I got into some fish shaped spoons I found guys using in new jersey, then I got into lil cleo's for steelhead on lake Erie tributaries, then I found these things. These have been the best and most productive spoon I've used.

I was blind casting a 3 inch gulp shrimp in new penny around some mangroves, and watched this little 2 and a half footer zoom out and lazily turn sideways, then dart back towards the mangroves. This is best shot I got of the whole thing. I don't have enough battery or memory to keep my camera on the entire time, so I usually only turn it on when I'm hooked up, or when I see a fish and deliberately cast to it.

I've been trying to catch crappie (or any panfish) and been skunked on every attempt. Feels bad man. Went to a farm pond that has largemouth and caught 2 just swimming a weightless texas rig, but that's basically fishing on easy mode.

Octopus hooks are not the same thing. Octopus hooks you still use a normal upward rod hookset and they can get stuck anywhere in the fish. (albeit at reduced rates since they are more round than a traditional j hook). A true circle hook you set the hook retrieving line with your reel and not with rod movement.

That's a carpsucker of some kind I believe. Buffalo have really distinctive eyes, and carpsuckers have that funky looking nose like the one you have. Neat catch, those are pretty rarely caught.

It's a 9 foot rod so definitely on the shorter side. I'll be fishing my local beaches. Species I'll be targeting don't seem too far out in the surf and I'll be throwing out lures more than soaking bait so I think I'll be alright. But who knows, maybe I messed up and went too short. If I don't catch anything, it'll be the perfect excuse to buy another rod.

The US is a joke. Same thing in my area for striper every spring every Juan, Jose and Chang line up all over the coastline and take every striper they catch regardless of size or limit. The cops come and hand out a few citations which amounts to a slap on the wrist and the vast majority get nothing. They are not going anywhere. They are in the entire Columbia river system including connected lakes and reservoirs.

I know they removed bag and slot limits to "protect" out-migrating smolt, but essentially all they are doing is destroying a world class fishery to look like they are trying to save the dead Pacific Salmon runs. So not only are we not going to have decent Salmon runs, but we're also not going to have a good walleye fishery.

The conditions in the Columbia, and Pacific Ocean just don't support strong Salmon runs anymore. And top that off with commercial and tribal fisheries taking the bulk of any salmon that do come back, the purpose of removing the slot and bag limits isn't even achieving there desired goals.

Also Walleye eat less Salmon smolt than native species lmao.

Try going smaller. You should catch tons of fish with a mister twister and a 1/64oz jig like a trout magnet. I like threading a trout worm like Berkeley on a 1/32oz jig and bouncing it like a ned rig. I do this same thing. I really got into using trout magnets this year and I'm not disappointed. I'm catching fish and other guys are standing around watching with their centerpins trying to figure it out.
Don't bother using them with a float. It can work, but jigging and fitness fishing them is the only way.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those are predators. They eat bugs, minnows, salamanders, anything that moves. Which is why you can catch them. The closest to non predatory you can get is a carp but they will still eat insects, worms, leeches, etc. I hope someone can correct me, but I don't know of any freshwater fish in the US that is strictly a herbivore. The only thing that comes to mind is an asian carp which is an invasive species.
Minnows, creek chubs, panfish, all the way up are all predatory.

It doesn't really matter if the fish are predatory or not unless they are very large or old it mostly depends on the water quality and amount of natural or artificial mercury and PCB levels of the area they are living. The smaller and younger they are the less time they've had to bioaccumulate pollutants though. Many filter feeders and mostly herbivore fish will still have high pollutants in their flesh if the body of water the reside in is sufficiently polluted, that's what eventually makes it's way up the food chain to larger more predatory fish to. The most polluted fish in waters around my area are largemouth, flathead and channel cat, northern pike, walleye, carp and some crappie while the least polluted are trout (live in cleaner waters) and sunfish (don't know why honestly since crappie fill almost the same niche) in my area in state tests.

that's not true, toxins bioaccumulate up the food chain. The higher up the food chain a predator is, the more they bioaccumulate. Large predator fish are eating smaller fish which have already accumulated toxins above the background levels.

I don't know what kind of mono you're using but I'd highly suggest switching to JDM flouro, it makes a world of difference. At the suggestion of another anon in here I started using FC Sniper 3lb and it's so much nicer, I haven't had a breakoff where I wasn't snagged. When it snaps it goes like a gunshot though and I worry about it whipping back on me when I break off a snag. For example, FC Sniper 3lb is 1.5 times narrower than suffix pro 4 lb sorry I'm rambling I'm about to go to bed.

In general yes, but it also heavily depends on the quality of the specific waters you are fishing. In light to mildly polluted waters with lots of suspended solids the entire trophic chain gets polluted to some extent, one near me the carp tested with the same level of mercury as the bass, catfish and crappie. Just check for health advisories on certain bodies of water/species from your fish and game if you don't already know.

Mercury mostly comes from rain, there is some point source pollution that causes it, but it's pretty rare. Some canadian shield lakes have super high mercury levels despite being in the middle of nowhere, without mines on them. Pretty much any lake is still going to have mercury levels in large, old, predators on par with high mercury saltwater fish even if they seem clean.

I really like that explanation, some great info for noobies. But for the purpose of what I was responding to, I was trying to get the other guy to realize that just because a fish is small, that does not exclude it from being a carnivore. There's a lot of good discussion to be had about mercury and PCB and I like where the guy was going with the testing. I enjoy experimentation. But, that guy should be more informed about fish in general if he is attempting any sort of experiment. My point was to make him do more research. Especially if he is a new fisherman.

I watch that show about the Texas Game Wardens, and rarely do they ticket anyone who is browner than Nosferatu. If you're white, they enforce it, but as long as you say No Comprende, they just take your fish to "donate", and write a warning. Law Enforcement might benefit from enforcing laws, but now that's racist.

Just keep in mind if you use fluro for main line it sinks and while its still technically possibly it is very bad for float fishing and top water lures because the weight of your running line pulling down from the opposite end and messes everything up, so it limits what you can throw with that setup.

Other options include: adding a pinch on weight to your straight tied mainline, using a swivel + leader, using a swivel + leader + your choice of weight above the swivel, using a float or weighted float, using a float + pinch on weights, or finally if that water is deeper 4+ feet or higher current just simply use 1/32 oz jighead.

The cheapest actual Shimano reels are like $70-$80. There is some stuff like the FX or the Sienna but they are not built like their normal reels and are mechanically very similar to reel to what most brands offer at that price point. I would not be brand loyal in that price range and just get whatever is on sale / seems like a good deal.

Hello /out/, it's been a while.

This summer I'm going to be spending a lot of time at the pond. It's a 6 acre, spring fed gravel pit, with a maximum known depth of ~10 yards.

The pond is home to
>largemouth bass (big chungus)
>northern pike (they were a mistake)
>bluegill
>sunfish
>rock bass
>various hybrids of the 3 above
>bullhead (have only ever seen 2)
>at least 1 really big goldfish
>snapping turtles
>painted turtles (really angry mofos)
>freshwater jellyfish

My old rods and reels are in serious disrepair and I pretty much need to start from scratch.

I prefer those open face spinning reels, and I need line that can bring in an 18" bass on crack that's buried itself deep in the weeds. For line I'm looking at 20lb FireLine. But what's a good cheap spinning reel, my budget is $50 max.

If you want reliable, don't. That being said, I fish some cheap Shakespeare Tigers when I'm hiking into thick brush with sandy creeks, and not a lot of knowledge of the area. I'd rather break a $20 combo than $100. If you have an Academy Sports nearby, go there instead. Walmart is notorious for bent bail wires and broken eyelets from poor shipping and mishandling. Maybe not all, but mine is for sure. Check everything thoroughly should you buy from there. You might even be better off checking local garage sales or even Craigslist.

My Pops brought in a 7 foot bull shark last night. I got a 4 footer as well, but his was the highlight. It's windy and choppy as shit today, so I don't want to launch the FrankenSUP before dawn. I'm going to throw out a live bait and see what the dawn bite from shore looks like, then I'll launch a little later. Shitty picture, but the best I could do while handling the spotlight, a knife, and pliers.

The wind is breaking my fucking balls this April. Every day I have off to fish there is like 20 mph winds and I have been waiting to take my kayak out to kick off the season but the bay and lakes are all white capped. Where I live don't have a lot of proper woodland either so most of the bank fishing is in parks with no wind breaks either.

Would be cheap and easy. When you're fishing for survival, you use passive fishing methods like a trot line. If or just individual lines tied off to trees with a baited hook under a float. Check them every few hours. Catch insects or dig up worms, or use fish scraps from your last catch as bait.

Anybody know for bow and stern lines when you roof top a boat / kayak why do they always attach them using hooks to the bottom of the car ? From my understanding their only real purpose is to stop it from flying forwards or backwards off the vehicle should you have main tie down failure. If thats the case why not just tie down to the roof rack itself ? (not the cross bar) You can get the ropes tighter and it would serve the same purpose.

Unfortunately the nearest Academy Sports is a 300 mile drive. Also don't have any Cabela's or Bass Pro shops nearby. We used to gave a Gander Mountain, but it closed. Also used to have a place called Lunker's, but it also closed and then turned into a weed dispensary. Only things we got left are Dicks and Dunham's.

Reels use both synthetic oil and synthetic grease. They are some proprietary blend of additives and crap, so I have no idea how you compare to some common stuff you might have in your garage.

It sounds like Wally World is your only choice for a new setup. You can get some good deals, but check the setup thoroughly for any damage. They usually also have a kit with the grease and oil you will need for reel repair. You can typically fix 10-12 reels with one kit. Search YouTube for 2nd Chance Tackle. He usually has done a breakdown and repair of your reel or similar, and he's very helpful. If your reel is gritty you need to clean it all before regreasing. A toothbrush is handy for this process.

I'm thinking about getting a boat to go strictly lake/river fishing, but I drive a Civic and live in an apartment with no garage or storage so it must be portable.

This. I have mine suspended in my garage with a bike pulley system. You could do that indoors and not take up valuable indoor space. They are rated for 50lbs, but as long as you anchor them into good studs, they will hold at least 60 lbs. Wall racks exist as well. I have a neighbor who mounted one to his shed. I would try to go with an HDPE style kayak for the prices you are willing to spend.

Keep in mind a lot of states require you to register your boat (and possibly get some license / training) as soon as you put a motor on it, including just a small electric trolling motor, and there is no exemption just because its an inflatable.

What he said. It's really nice in regards to balance. Even in heavy chop, the waves wash over the board rather than tumping me, and it turns on a dime when I hook up, so it's great for fighting fish. I do have plans for a nice pedal drive yak at some point, but it's something I just can't justify right now. I'm really bummed that Sundolphin is a dead company now.
