For ticks, permethrin is your friend (apply to clothes only). I've bushwhacked more than most hikers, mostly in two of the worst states for ticks and Lyme Disease, and have never had a single tick attach itself to me or my clothes in all these years.
Snakes usually give you advance warning, but you need to be careful when stepping on/over rocks and deadfall, and obviously scan your eyes below in tall grassy areas
As for the last part, you'd have to be a complete moron to go deep into the backcountry without proper navigational tools, electronic or otherwise. Stick to your marked trails if you don't know what the fuck you're doing in the actual wilderness, thx
