Looking to get the best possible trekking poles for the wife. She’s been having hip and knee issues so it’s making backpacking hard for her but it’s our favorite thing to do. Figured I’d get her a set for her birthday so we can hike more often. Any recommendations?

I disagree on carbon and shock absorbing, but maybe they cancel out. I have aluminum Black Diamond poles and they are sturdy and have lasted almost 15 years so far. The carbon fiber poles that I have used had too much wobble. When they hit the ground, they'd vibrate because they were flimsy. The shock absorbing feature is another annoyance engineered into trekking poles--it is a point of failure and it also makes the pole feel less stable in my hand. When I said they could cancel out, though, maybe the shock absorbing spring would make the flimsy carbon fiber poles not wobble as much, so maybe it would work out overall...? Anyway, I'd strongly recommend keeping it simple with aluminum poles that are designed to be rigid in use.

Black diamond folding aluminum poles are great, I prefer them over the telescoping types. As other people have said, shock absorbing tips are a stupid meme.

I think you've got it mixed up, carbon fibre is totally rigid while aluminium has flex in it
I'm speaking from knowledge of kayaking paddles though, I don't know if "carbon fibre" trekking poles are made differently to kayak paddles
Either way you probably want aluminium for the small amount of flex, it seems silly to get carbon fibre poles then negate its rigidness with stabilisers

I've owned the black diamond alpine's, the leki corklite and I now have the Gossamer Gear LT5's. One thing I really like is cork handles. They're comfy and you don't get blisters. Flip locks are nice, but I have been really surprised how well the twist locks work on the LT5's. The LT5's also have the most comfy handles I've come across and they're very light weight, but perhaps not as durable as the black diamond's or the leki's. Time will tell. I will say that both black diamond and leki have great customer support and both companies have replaced my poles for free on thru hikes.
